If you have computers in your library, you are getting questions and requests for help from your patrons on any number of subjects, from basic computer skills, such as setting up an e-mail account or navigating the Internet, to more advanced applications such as social networking, applying for jobs online, or using e-readers. Need help? Register now for a free, four-part technology webinar series sponsored by the Washington State Library. Stephanie Gerding, author of The Accidental Technology Trainer, will share practical tips and best practices for planning and promoting computer classes at the library, engaging students, and evaluating success. She will address the most common concerns from new trainers including:

  • Fear of failure;
  • Lack of confidence;
  • Uncertainty about how to deal with difficult situations;
  • How to handle logistics, space limitations, and planning.
For maximum benefit, participants are encouraged to attend all four live webinar sessions, as content in each session will build upon the previous session(s). Sign up today for the free workshop, Are You Ready? Testing Your Disaster Plan & Furthering Collaboration Among Heritage Institutions to Improve Disaster Preparedness for Collections, sponsored by WESTPAS (Western States & Territories Preservation Assistance Service) with funding provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Take a day to test your institution’s disaster plan to identify areas for improvement, to improve your ability to evaluate risks, and to work together with other participants to build a shared vision for regional disaster preparedness. Share your ideas and experience in caring for your staff, your users, or your collections at Taking Care: Our Selves, Our Users, Our Collections, the 2013 ACRL (Association of College & Research Libraries) Washington and Oregon Joint Conference, October 24 – 25, 2013 at Pack Forest, Eatonville, Washington. The ACRL WA Board is now accepting proposals for concurrent sessions. For more information and to submit a proposal, go to sos.wa.gov/q/ACRL2013. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) AFFORDABLE CARE ACT RESOURCES FOR LIBRARIES On October 1, 2013, federal and state-run Health Insurance Marketplaces will open for public enrollment as part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Libraries, with a long history of meeting public demand for consumer health information as well as providing access to computers and the Internet, are likely to see an increased demand for these services with the launch of the Marketplaces. To assist, WebJunction has launched a new project to provide library staff with resources to help them connect patrons to information about the ACA. Supported through a cooperative agreement with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in partnership with WebJunction and ZeroDivide, this project seeks to:
  • Leverage new and existing information for libraries to help patrons with requests related specifically to the ACA, both prior to and after the October 1, 2013 date for open enrollment (more information will be posted as it becomes available);
  • Assess state and public library needs regarding patron requests for health information and resources;
  • Develop a comprehensive guide for state and public libraries to help patrons navigate health information at their local libraries;
  • Facilitate an online community of practice for librarians to connect and share resources related to patron needs related to health and wellness.

All these and more can threaten collections. Register now for a free 2-part disaster preparedness and response workshop, Protecting Cultural Collections, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and sponsored by WESTPAS and the Seattle Heritage Emergency Response Network (SHERN). This workshop is part of a coordinated regional approach to raising awareness about disaster planning for collecting institutions throughout the Western United States. This 2-part training is free to participants, who will:
  • Complete a disaster response and collection salvage plan for their collections by the end of Part 2;
  • Learn how to train staff to implement the plan effectively;
  • Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for collections;
  • Understand how to use practical decision-making skills during an emergency;
  • Have hands-on practice in salvage procedures for a variety of materials including books, documents, photographs, and objects.
