Library blogs could do a better job showcasing everything else that makes libraries valuable and indispensable to the people they serve. Come to the next First Tuesdays presentation, Blogging Beyond Book Recommendations, where Rosemary Washington, Library Associate at the Greenwood branch of the Seattle Public Library, will share tips for making blog posts visually appealing and ideas for inspiring your readers to keep coming back. Summer is coming to a close and summer reading programs are winding down. With the conclusion of summer programming, this is the perfect time to start thinking about your library’s transition from WorldCat® Resource Sharing to WorldShare® Interlibrary Loan. WorldShare Interlibrary Loan delivers new and expanded functionality that supports evolving workflow changes such as the option to purchase needed materials instead of borrow them. The service’s interoperation with other applications, such as the display of lender costs from the OCLC Policies Directory and display of item availability from a library’s ILS will be supported by the new WorldShare Platform. It is important to get a jump start on your transition, so your staff can take advantage of the many training opportunities available. On November 25th, libraries will no longer be able to initiate new requests in WorldCat Resource Sharing, in preparation for the end of access on January 3, 2014. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) WANTED – IDEAS FOR FIRST ANNUAL DPLAFEST The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) brings together the riches of America’s libraries, archives, and museums, making them freely available to the world. The first annual DPLAfest will be held in Boston, Massachusetts, October 24 – 25, 2013. DPLA would like to hear from you – what topics for sessions, workshops, activities, or discussions would you like to see included at this event? If you have any suggestions for a DPLA-related session or workshop, go to bit.ly/11KXhch and fill out the request form. But don’t delay – request forms must be received by DPLA no later than Thursday, August 9, 2013. For more information about DPLAfest2013, visit sos.wa.gov/q/DPLA2013. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) FILM FORWARD NEEDS PROGRAM COLLABORATORS Film Forward is a cultural exchange program designed to enhance cross-cultural understanding, collaboration, and dialogue around the globe by engaging audiences through the exhibition of film and conversation with filmmakers. The initiative is led by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities (PCAH) and the Sundance Institute, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Through this program, U.S. and international filmmakers are paired and sent abroad and to U.S. cities where events, including educational programs, take place in libraries, museums, theaters, and other venues. Film Forward’s goal is to reach audiences that do not have access to independent film and create cultural conversations to break down barriers and bridge similarities between cultures, using the power of storytelling to light the fires of curiosity about other cultures and new ways of thinking. Libraries, museums, and other cultural organizations in the state of Washington are especially encouraged to serve as Program Collaborators in the coming year and may partner to co-host programs.
