Don’t miss a power-packed week of engaging programs; the opportunity to network with friends, collaborators, and colleagues; and inspiration from the wonderful array of speakers including:

  • Keynoter Ally Condie, author of the international bestseller, Matched, which was chosen as one of YALSA’s 2011 Teens’ Top Ten, and named as one of Publisher’s Weekly’s Best Children’s Books of 2010;
  • Marshall Shore, (aka the “Hip Historian”), a Library Journal “Mover and Shaker” and a leader in the move toward “Deweyless” Libraries;
  • Nancy Stewart, recipient of two Parent’s Choice Awards, an ALA Notable Recording, and the CAYAS Award for Visionary Library Service to Youth, who will speak on the importance of music and early literacy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) HELP END VETERAN HOMELESSNESS The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is committed to ending veteran homelessness by the end of 2015. No one who has served our country should ever go without a safe, stable place to call home. Organizations and individuals in communities across the country are integral to providing help to veterans and spreading the word about the resources available to them. During ALA’s Annual Conference, the VA and the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services highlighted new resources that librarians can use to help veterans who are homeless get back on their feet, including:
  • va.gov/homeless – Web site with links to numerous resources for veterans;
  • 877-4AID-VET (877-424-3828) – Toll-free number for access to VA services for homeless and at-risk veterans;
  • Homeless Veteran Chat – Online support for veterans and friends.
The hotline and online chat are free, confidential, and available 24/7. Trained responders, many of them veterans themselves, can connect veterans with the services they’ve earned. Additional information about these services and more may be found by going to sos.wa.gov/q/VAChat. Help the VA spread the word in your community through brochures, posters, wallet cards, and web banners. Find these and other resources by visiting va.gov/homeless/resource_center.asp. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) YOUTH SERVICES STAFF – SHARE YOUR SUCCESSES Calling all Washington State Youth Services Staff! Share your recent programming and outreach success stories with other youth services staff from around the state by submitting an article or idea to CAYAS (Children and Young Adult Services, an interest group of the Washington Library Association). Graphics are encouraged. Your colleagues – and Washington’s children – will thank you. Submit your posts to the editor, Kendra Jones at [email protected]. To view issues of the CAYAS E-Newsletter go to wla.org/cayas-communications. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) NEW MENTORING PROGRAM FROM ALSC The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of ALA, is launching a new mentoring program to:
  • Build the skills and confidence of early career children’s librarians and those new to the profession;
  • Encourage personal and professional connections;
  • Give members the opportunity to acquire peer-taught skills;
  • Re-energize and re-invigorate members in their work;
  • Create interest and familiarity with ALSC committee service and participation;
  • Build familiarity with ALSC’s Competencies for Librarians Serving Children in Public Libraries;
  • Foster the development of a new cohort of leaders.
Participants have the opportunity to apply twice a year (once in the summer, once in the fall) for this one-year program. Mentee applicants do not need to be ALSC or ALA members. The only requirement is that they have some connection to children’s library service. Mentor applicants must be ALSC members and should have experience working in the field of children’s librarianship or children’s literature. Applications for fall 2013 must be submitted by Friday, August 30, 2013. Join information professionals from around the world and interact with library leaders and experts in the field at the virtual conference, Mobile Devices: Gateway to Your Library, presented by SEFLIN (Southeast Florida Library Information Network).
