Volume 9, August 29, 2013 for the WSL Updates mailing list Topics include: 1) BE A VOICE FOR LIBRARIES 2) SING WITH OUR KIDS – FREE WORKSHOP 3) CATCH THE WALE EARLY BIRD BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE 4) AFFORDABLE CARE ACT – INFORMATION SOURCES 5) CARING FOR YESTERDAY’S TREASURES – TODAY 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) BE A VOICE FOR LIBRARIES The Library Council of Washington (LCW) advises the State Librarian and the Office of the Secretary of State on statewide library issues and the expenditure of federal LSTA funding. The LCW meets four times a year. Meetings are held throughout the state in different types of libraries, or online. Travel reimbursement is provided in accordance with state travel regulations. Applications are currently being accepted to fill the following positions on the Council:

  • Academic Libraries (Two-Year): Representing the needs and issues of two-year community and technical college libraries;
  • Cultural Diversity: Representing the needs and issues of libraries serving people of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and individuals of varying abilities, literacy levels, and age levels;
  • School Libraries: representing the needs and issues of K-12 school libraries.
Applications must be postmarked by Friday, September 13, 2013, to be considered. The term for all of these positions is anticipated to begin in January 2014.   • Enhance programming with extensive free materials;
  • Plan and host multi-generational singing events that educate participants about the role singing plays in early literacy while building family and community;
  • Raise awareness of library resources while facilitating their use across all areas of a young child’s life, from home and extended family to school and community;
  • Incorporate technology responsibly into early literacy programming and community outreach.
This program is for multi-generational groups and is appropriate for both libraries and community partners. Staff from senior centers and retirement homes, community organizers, day care providers, and school personnel are welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided for all who come. Registration will close for each session either when capacity has been reached or 2 weeks prior to the session so that catering can be arranged. Workshops will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. PDT at the following locations:

  • Wednesday, September 18, Yakima Valley Regional Library, Sunnyside Branch;
  • Thursday, September 19, Richland Public Library;
  • Friday, September 20, Columbia County Rural Library District, Dayton;
  • Monday, September 23, Port Townsend Library;
  • Tuesday, September 24, Everett Public Library;
  • Wednesday, September 25, Pierce County Library Processing and Administrative Center, Tacoma;
  • Thursday, September 26, Timberland Regional Library Service Center, Tumwater;
  • Friday, September 27, Fort Vancouver Regional Library;
  • Monday, September 30, Washington Talking Book & Braille Library, Seattle;
  • Friday, October 25, Spokane County – Moran Prairie Branch.
The following workshop will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. PDT:
  • Tuesday, September 17, North Central Regional Library Distribution Center, Wenatchee.
All workshops are funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). Beginning in October, the general public is expected to seek help from libraries and other organizations to learn about the health insurance requirements and options that will be available for them at the Health Insurance Marketplace, an element of ACA. To support the information needs of the Pacific Northwest Region (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington) regarding both national and state-specific news, information, and resources on ACA, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) has launched a website on the Act, also accessible from Quick Links section of the NNLM homepage. Washington-specific information on ACA may be found by visiting Washington Healthplanfinder at wahealthplanfinder.org. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) CARING FOR YESTERDAY’S TREASURES – TODAY Caring for Yesterday’s Treasures – Today, a series of free online courses focused on the preservation of archival and historical collections, and tailored to fit the needs and schedules of staff and volunteers at libraries and archives, was launched in January 2013. Each course includes several 90-minute interactive webinars presented by preservation experts. Registration is now open for the following three new online courses:
  • Fundraising for Collections Care – September 23, 25 and October 1, 3 (11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. PDT);
  • Caring for Audiovisual Materials – October 16, 21, 23, 28, 30 (11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. PDT);
  • Outreach Activities for Collections Care – November 4, 6, 12, 14 (11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. PST).
Registration will close one week prior to the start of each course. Participants will earn a certificate of completion if they view all the webinars in a course and submit simple homework assignments.
