Sept. 24 is National Voter Registration Day as designated by the National Association of Secretaries of State and Secretary of State Kim Wyman.

Wyman, who sits on the NASS executive board, encourages all eligible Washington citizens who haven’t registered yet to do so in time to vote in the General Election this fall. Washington has more than 3.9 million active registered voters, well above the 3.5 million mark that was set in the watershed 2008 election cycle. Wyman and state Elections Division Director Lori Augino hope to reach 4 million registered voters in the coming days.

“Now that would be something to brag about.” Augino said.

Wyman is urging all qualified residents to celebrate the day by signing up:

“We are so fortunate in Washington to have multiple different outlets for voter registration. I really encourage all eligible Washingtonians to take advantages of the resources provided and vote! It’s as easy as 1-2-3.”

Registering really is easier than ever. Washington residents can register to vote, update their address, find places to return their ballot, and access more information pertaining to upcoming elections through the online application MyVote.

Residents can also access MyVote to register through the Washington State Elections Facebook, which provides helpful information on numerous initiatives.

If you want to register this year, the deadlines to do so are approaching fast. Oct. 7 is the deadline to register online or to change addresses or make any other updates to your registration status. Oct. 28 is the last day for in-person voter registration at your county elections department if you haven’t registered to vote in Washington.

“Keeping your registration up-to-date ensures that you will receive your ballot in time to participate. During National Voter Registration Month, let’s show the rest of the country that Washington takes voting seriously.” Augino said.

Once you have registered be sure to check out the 2013 Online Voters' Guide for information concerning election measures. The 2013 Voters’ Pamphlet will be mailed to all Washington households in mid-October.

Ballots for the General Election will also be going out by mail in mid-October. The postmark deadline for returning ballots by mail or using a drop box is by Election Day, Nov. 5.
