The Organic Act of March 2, 1853 provided $5,000 for the purchase of library materials. On May 21, 1953 the first shipment of books, selected by the Territorial Governor of Washington, Isaac I. Stevens, left New York City on the clipper ship, Invincible. Arriving in San Francisco on September 9, 1853, the Invincible’s cargo of books was transferred to the brig Tarquinia, which left San Francisco on October 5, 1853. At long last, on October 23, 1853, the first shipment of books for the Territorial Library arrived in Olympia. To mark this important occasion, the Washington State Library is celebrating the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Washington Territorial Library with an open house. The celebration theme is “Washington State Library: 160 Years of Serving the People of Washington.” Come and join the festivities!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) WASHINGTON HISTORY – ONLINE! Explore history with the Washington State Library’s digital collections—travel the Oregon Trail, visit Japanese Internment camps, observe pioneer military campaigns, follow early explorers and fur traders, and enter the homes and settlements of early pioneers. Learn about the many online primary and secondary resources available through the State Library in a free webinar, Washington History – Online!
  • When: Tuesday, October 15, 2013;

    • Repeated 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. PDT;
  • Cost: Free;

We’ll look at newspapers from across the state, full-text books, manuscripts, maps, and scrapbooks, that document labor unrest, woman suffrage campaigns, Native American traditions and political conflicts from the territorial period into the 20th century. The presentation will highlight resources that can meet the needs of students, teachers, genealogists, and researchers interested in Washington’s history. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) DIGITAL LITERACY GRANT CYCLE NOW OPEN The Washington State Library has opened a competitive LSTA (Library Services Technology Act) grant cycle, Digital Literacy 2013. Its purpose is to provide funding to public, academic, college, tribal, and school libraries to implement pilot projects that support Digital Literacy projects in the community. Projects should meet at least one of the following objectives:
  • Encourage the development of skills required to communicate and perform business transactions in a digital environment;
  • Use diverse technologies appropriately to retrieve quality information;
  • Support the development of skills to collaborate with others or to enhance employability in a digital and evolving world.
Overall funding to support this grant cycle is $75,000, with a maximum request of $7,500 per application. It is anticipated that 10 or more applicants may receive awards. Applications must be postmarked or hand delivered by 4:00 p.m. PDT, Friday, November 8, 2013. For more information or to apply, go to sos.wa.gov/q/grants. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) CAYAS WORKSHOP – CONNECTING, MAKING, HACKING OMG! Maker spaces, hacking, connected learning, social media, Twitter … There are so many new and different ways to connect with youth and their families in the community it’s hard to know what to use and why. In this facilitated interactive discussion you'll learn about libraries that provide services to youth using maker spaces, hacker spaces, and connected learning. Come to the CAYAS fall workshop, Connecting, Making, Hacking the New World of Tween and Teen Services and find out how to determine which services are best for your community and your library and how to get buy-in for these services from colleagues, administration, and community members. You'll leave the session thinking, OMG this is awesome! Workshops will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. PDT at two locations:
  • Friday, October 25, 2013, Vancouver Public Library, 901 C Street, Vancouver – Registration deadline: October 23, 2013;
  • Friday, November 1, 2013, KCLS Service Center, 960 Newport Way, Issaquah – Registration deadline: October 30, 2013.
Registration: $90 for WLA (Washington Library Association) members; $125 for non-members; $70 for students. Lunch and refreshments will be provided at both workshops. For more information and to register, visit sos.wa.gov/q/CAYASomg. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) MEDICAID EXPANSION TOOLKIT The new insurance Exchange (wahealthplanfinder.org) opened for business on October 1. Many Washington families are now looking for information about available coverage as well as how to use the new Exchange. They may not know that they can now enroll in Medicaid under higher-income limits for coverage that will take effect on January 1, 2014. To help libraries promote awareness of the expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, the State of Washington Health Care Authority (HCA) has put together a toolkit that includes information on downloading materials in different languages. The HCA will continue to add tools to the kit as the expansion to Medicaid continues. To access the Toolkit, go to sos.wa.gov/q/HCAKit.
