The Preservation Directorate fulfills this mission directly through the provision of conservation, binding, mass deacidification, reformatting, materials testing, and staff and user education; and indirectly through the coordination and oversight of all Library-wide activities relating to the preservation and physical protection of the collections. The Conservation Division of the Directorate ensures continued access to the LOC’s special collections by providing assessments, surveys, reviews, collections stabilization and housing, and treatments for research, exhibits, digitization, loans, and collection moves and other storage improvements. Beyond the LOC, the Conservation Division furthers the field of conservation through other activities, including hosting advanced conservation internships. The following internships enable conservation program students or emerging conservators to complete or further their graduate education in general collections conservation, special collections conservation, preventive conservation, library binding, preservation reformatting, or preservation science by spending a year in the LOC’s conservation laboratories:

  • Advanced Book Conservation Internship;
  • Advanced Paper Conservation Internship;
  • Advanced Photograph Conservation Internship;
  • Advanced Preventive Conservation Internship;
  • Junior Fellows Summer Intern Program;
  • Multicultural Initiative;
  • Preservation Digital Technology Internship;
  • Preservation Internship/Volunteer Opportunity;
  • Preservation Science Internship.

Applications for all other fellowship, internship, and volunteer opportunities in the Library's Preservation Directorate are accepted at any time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) NOMINATE AN OUTSTANDING COLLEAGUE Nominations are now being accepted for the Allie Beth Martin Award, presented by the Public Library Association (PLA) and Baker & Taylor. The award provides recognition and a $3,000 honorarium to a librarian who, in a public library setting, has demonstrated: (1) extraordinary range and depth of knowledge about books or other library materials; and (2) distinguished ability to share that knowledge. The award was established by the Public Library Association Board of Directors in 1978. After its 1993 fall meeting, the PLA Executive Committee notified PLA Award Chairs that the word “librarian” is defined as a professional possessing a Master of Library Science degree. Therefore, persons not having earned an MLS are ineligible to receive the Allie Beth Martin Award. For additional information, visit sos.wa.gov/q/Allie. Nominations must be received no later than 9:59 p.m. PST, Monday, December 2, 2013. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) BRANDING SCHOOL LIBRARIANSHIP How will school librarians and school library programs be perceived in the future? The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has launched two national surveys to determine what the brands “school librarian,” “L4L,” and “@your library” mean to current and future school library professionals and educational stakeholders. School librarians are not only encouraged to complete the profession-focused survey, but to ask members of their educational communities to take the stakeholder survey. To reach a wide audience and collect a representative sample AASL will also be reaching out to several national educational organizations and requesting their help to disseminate the stakeholder survey to their memberships. The comparison between the data collected from each survey will help AASL determine how it can best address gaps and meet the needs of both groups. To take a survey, go to: Surveys will be open through December 2, 2013. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) PRESERVATION GRANTS FOR SOUND RECORDINGS The Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and study of sound recordings in all genres of music and speech, in all formats, and from all periods. The ARSC Program for the Preservation of Classical Music Historical Recordings supports the preservation of historically significant sound recordings of Western Art Music by awarding grants ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 to individuals and organizations to fund projects that:
  • Involve preservation of commercial, as well as private, instantaneous recordings in any valid and reasonable fashion, such as:
    • Providing a collection with proper climate control;
    • Moving a collection to facilities with proper storage conditions;
    • Re-sleeving a collection of discs;
    • Setting up a volunteer project to organize and inventory a stored collection;
    • Rescuing recordings from danger;
    • Making preservation copies of recordings on endangered or unstable media.
  • Promote public access to recordings.

The Upstart Innovation Award, sponsored by Upstart, a Demco company, (formerly the Highsmith Library Innovation Award) recognizes innovative and cutting-edge programs, activities, or services implemented by public libraries. Has your library developed a dynamic solution to a problem? Have you been able to reach a special population through a unique program? Has your special marketing campaign brought dramatic, measurable results? If so, you're eligible to apply. The winner of this award will receive a check in the amount of $2,000 and a plaque.
