The Preservation Directorate fulfills this mission directly through the provision of conservation, binding, mass deacidification, reformatting, materials testing, and staff and user education; and indirectly through the coordination and oversight of all Library-wide activities relating to the preservation and physical protection of the collections. The Conservation Division of the Directorate ensures continued access to the LOC’s special collections by providing assessments, surveys, reviews, collections stabilization and housing, and treatments for research, exhibits, digitization, loans, and collection moves and other storage improvements. Beyond the LOC, the Conservation Division furthers the field of conservation through other activities, including hosting advanced conservation internships.
