How can you tell if a book is intended for:

A child just starting to read;
Someone whose reading level is at the beginning of second grade;
A reader who is somewhere in between?

Come to next week’s First Tuesdays webinar, Easy Readers Aren’t so Easy, where Spokane County Library Youth Services librarians, Gwendolyn Hayley and Mary Ellen Braks, will guide you through the confusing world of easy readers. Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation, which will take place on December 3, 2013, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PST, lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. For instructions on joining the presentation, visit sos.wa.gov/q/FirstTuesdays. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) GET THE WORD OUT – LIBRARIES HELP TEENS SUCCEED In conjunction with #GivingTuesday, YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of ALA) has created an online campaign to raise awareness of the important role libraries play in helping teens succeed in school and prepare for careers. The campaign uses a platform called Thunderclap that allows anyone to create an automatic Twitter, Tumblr, or Facebook message urging others to “Support libraries' efforts to give all teens a bright future by being a part of #GivingTuesday thndr.it/17c4Fjk.” The message will automatically post to these major social media sites at 10:00 a.m. PST, Tuesday, December 3, 2013. From the new screen, log into your Twitter, Facebook and/or Tumblr account;

To learn about other ways you can support library services for teens, visit ala.org/yalsa/advocacy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) CALL FOR PAPERS ON UX Weave is a peer-reviewed, open access, web-based publication featuring articles on user experience design for librarians and professionals in related fields, striving for a balance between theoretical and practical topics. Weave is currently seeking articles related to the following two categories:

Full length, scholarly articles of relevance to UX in libraries:
- Innovative and cutting edge research;
- Practical applications and their implications;
- Ideas and speculation about future directions for UX;
- Reviews of books and publications of interest to UX professionals.
The Dialog Box: A new kind of review section, going beyond the traditional book review section and featuring critical dialog not only with books but with other media that set the boundaries of library UX.

For additional information, including guidelines for submission, visit weaveux.org. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM AWARD DEADLINE EXTENDED Underwritten by the Gerald Hodges Fund and sponsored by the Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) of ALA, the Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award recognizes an organization that has developed a strong multi-year, ongoing program or a single, one-year project that exemplifies support for intellectual freedom, patron confidentiality, and anti-censorship efforts. The award consists of $1,000 and a citation. The deadline for nominations this year has been extended to Wednesday, January 1, 2014. For additional information and to submit a nomination, go to sos.wa.gov/q/Hodges. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) FUNDING TO IMPROVE PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICE Loleta D. Fyan, 1951-1952 ALA President and a driving force behind Library Services and Construction Act (LSCA) funding, believed that every individual, regardless of residence, is equally entitled to high quality library service and that librarians must be adept in using the political process to acquire this “right of citizenship.” ALA’s Office for Research and Statistics is now accepting applications for the Loleta D. Fyan Grant, which awards up to $5,000 for the development and improvement of public libraries and the services they provide. Award-winning projects:

Must result in the development and improvement of public libraries and the services they provide;
Must have the potential for broader impact and application beyond meeting a specific local need;
Should be designed to effect changes in public library services that are innovative and responsive to the future;
Should be capable of completion within one year.

Applicants can include, but are not limited to, local, regional, or state libraries, associations or organizations, including units of ALA; library schools; or individuals.
