  • Stories for Boys: A Memoir by Gregory Martin – 593 copies;
  • The Submission: A Novel by Amy Waldron – 98 copies;
  • Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White – 55 copies;
  • A Great Deliverance by Elizabeth George – 10 copies;
  • Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond – 10 copies;
  • A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess – 9 copies.
Please request a minimum of five copies. Books will be mailed free of charge. Why not spend the day at the annual iYouth Conference? It’s a professional development event open to all students and professionals who are interested in library services for youth from birth to 18. Presented by the University of Washington’s student organization, iYouth, this year’s conference theme, “[R]Evolution,” will look at the ways in which the face of librarianship is adapting to meet the evolving needs of young patrons. UW Information School Dean Emeritus, Dr. Michael Eisenberg, will give a keynote speech to cap a day filled with lectures and workshops that address the increasingly important impact of technological change and community outreach programming.   • Fees: Range from $20.00 to $50.00;

This year’s conference will include presentations on digital badges, APIs, eBooks, and more. The keynote speaker will be Andromeda Yelton, a 2013 Library Journal “Mover and Shaker,” whose topic will be “Five Conversations: Empowering Librarians Through Code.” Conference information:
  • When: Friday, February 7, 2014;
  • Where: CH2M Hill Alumni Center (on the Oregon State University campus), Corvallis, Oregon;
  • Registration: $100 (before January 10, 2014); $130 (regular); $150 (onsite).

For more information and to register, visit onlinenorthwest.org. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) GET READY FOR TEEN TECH WEEK Teen Tech Week™ (TTW), a national initiative sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of ALA, is an annual celebration of digital literacy and technology at the library aimed at teens, their parents, educators, and other concerned adults. The purpose of the initiative is to ensure that teens gain the digital literacy skills they need—with the help of libraries—in order to be successful in school and prepared to participate in a 21st century workforce. TTW will be celebrated this year from March 9 – 15. This year’s theme, “DIY @ your library,” provides an opportunity for libraries to show how they provide meaningful contributions to the educational and social development of the teens in their communities, including everything from maker spaces, to coding classes, to online knitting clubs. Those registering for Teen Tech Week enjoy benefits including monthly free webinars, updates about grant opportunities, and materials from TTW partners, such as database trials, books, and more. Register now to take advantage of the January 21 webinar, “Leveraging Partnerships.” To find out more and to register, go to ala.org/teentechweek. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) APPLY NOW FOR BOOKAPALOOZA Each year, the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of ALA, receives almost 3,000 newly published books, videos, audio books, and recordings from children’s trade publishers. The materials are primarily for children age birth through fourteen and are submitted to ALSC award and media evaluation selection committees for award and notables consideration. After each ALA Midwinter Meeting in January, these materials (published in the preceding year) need to be removed from the ALSC office to make room for a new year of publications. ALSC and the Grants Administration Committee are now accepting online applications for the 2014 Bookapalooza Program, which finds new homes for these materials. ALSC will select three libraries to receive a Bookapalooza collection of materials to be used in a way that creatively enhances their library service to children and families. Since ALSC receives such a wide variety and assortment of materials, they are unable to guarantee the format and quality of content of all materials provided.
