Come to next week’s First Tuesdays webinar, Humanities Washington, where Zaki Abdelhamid from the private nonprofit organization, Humanities Washington, will describe resources that this organization can provide to libraries to generate new audiences, enhance adult programs, and engage a diverse group of participants in discussions about ideas that affect our lives in the state. Humanities Washington is dedicated to sparking conversation and critical thinking, using story as a catalyst, to nurture thoughtful and engaged communities across our state. Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation, which will take place on February 4, 2014, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PST, lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. Mark your calendar now for a free online orientation presented by WSL’s Library Development consultants, Carolyn Petersen and Diane Hutchins, who will cover:

Responsibilities of a board member;
Differences between roles of an advisory library board and a governing library board;
Differences between roles of the library board and the library director;
Open Public Meetings Act;
What to do when the press calls;
Interacting with staff;
Resources from the Washington State Library.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to find out about the new Washington Public Library Trustee Wiki, an online resource that provides easy access to resources that trustees need at the click of a mouse or a tap on a screen. Webinar information:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) 2014 BROADBAND GRANT CYCLE The Washington State Library (WSL) is pleased to announce the 2014 Broadband Grant Cycle, the purpose of which is to provide funds for public and tribal libraries to upgrade and/or add network hardware and software to take advantage of significantly enhanced broadband connectivity. Preference will be given to those libraries participating in Round One or Two ARRA Broadband (NTIA BTOP) grants awarded to the Northwest Open Access Network (NoaNet). Overall funding to support this grant cycle is $100,000 with a limit of $10,000 per application. It is anticipated that 10 or more applicants may receive awards. Application deadline is Friday, March 14, 2014. More details on this grant cycle, including guidelines, application forms, and other related materials, may be found at sos.wa.gov/q/grants. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) CAYAS VISIONARY AWARD NOMINATIONS Nominations are now being accepted for the 2014 CAYAS Visionary Award, presented every year by CAYAS (Children and Young Adult Services), a WLA Interest Group (IG), to recognize an individual who, through their practice and example, provides inspiration and leadership for others who serve children and young adults in libraries. Those eligible to be nominated for this award include staff or volunteers from public, school or special libraries. The work that qualifies an individual for nomination may include cumulated efforts over several years in the field of library service to youth, or may be a singular and exceptional effort that sets new standards for practice. The purpose of the award is not only to commend the individual who will receive it, but also to appreciate and bring attention to the remarkable and tireless efforts of all individuals who work with young people in libraries. Are you curious about new models and tools for online training development, and also eager to explore methods that reduce the cost and time involved in developing quality online learning experiences? With the support of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and in partnership with Infopeople, WebJunction is offering a free, 4-month training program for up to 12 seasoned trainers in public libraries who want to learn best practices for designing and delivering online learning that:

Takes less time and resources to produce than traditional self-paced training;
Makes use of existing and emerging best practices for effective learning;
Focuses on teamwork, sharing, and mutual support.
