Volume 10, March 13, 2014 for the WSL Updates mailing list Topics include: 1) SPACES STILL AVAILABLE AT FREE MENTAL HEALTH WORKSHOPS 2) YOUR INPUT NEEDED FOR NEW SALARY SURVEY 3) A SPECIAL DAY FOR BOOKMOBILES 4) CELEBRATE PRESERVATION WEEK WITH FREE WEBINARS 5) SERVING NEW AMERICANS 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK 1) SPACES STILL AVAILABLE AT FREE MENTAL HEALTH WORKSHOPS WSL is currently offering a free new in-person workshop, Mental Health First Aid, which can help participants identify, understand, and respond to signs of addictions and mental illnesses and know how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. At this 8-hour workshop, led by certified instructors following a national curriculum, attendees will learn how to:

  • Identify risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems;
  • Find resources and information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, and addiction disorders;
  • Implement a five-step action plan to help someone developing a mental health problem or someone already in crisis;
  • Identify where to turn for help in regard to professional, peer, and self-help resources.
All workshops will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Spaces are still available at the following locations:
  • Tuesday, April 1 – Richland Public Library, Richland;
  • Tuesday, June 10 – Comprehensive Mental Health Yakima, Yakima;
  • Thursday, June 19 – Whatcom County Library Processing and Administrative Office, Bellingham;
  • Monday, July 14 – Fort Vancouver Regional Library – Vancouver Branch, Vancouver;
  • Tuesday, July 29 – Washington Talking Book & Braille Library, Seattle;
  • Thursday, August 14 – Port Angeles Public Library, Port Angeles;
  • Thursday, August 21 – Whitman County Library – Colfax Library, Colfax;
  • Friday, August 22 – Spokane County Library – Moran Prairie Branch, Spokane.
Although this workshop is free, registration is required. Class size is limited to 25 participants per session and registration is on a first come, first served basis. Lunch will be provided. For additional information and to register, go to sos.wa.gov/q/MH1stAid. 2) YOUR INPUT NEEDED FOR NEW SALARY SURVEY The editors of Library Journal (LJ) are excited to be launching a new national survey that will complement LJ's Annual Placements & Salaries Survey, which focuses on librarians' first job after graduation from a Masters' program. The new survey will gather current data on library-related salaries to gain insights into compensation trends at all career levels and across all types of libraries. Librarians and paralibrarians from all types of libraries, both traditional and alternative, are encouraged to participate in this survey, which should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Given that much of this information is sensitive in nature, all final data will be shown in aggregate form only. Median salaries for multiple positions will be published in the July issue of Library Journal. To take the survey, go to fluidsurveys.com/s/2014-LJ-salary. Please help to make the study a success by sharing this link with colleagues in all U.S. library settings. 3) A SPECIAL DAY FOR BOOKMOBILES National Bookmobile Day, observed this year on Wednesday, April 16, celebrates our nation’s bookmobiles and the dedicated library staff who provide this valuable and essential service to their communities. Every day, bookmobiles bring the world to the communities they serve – from books, magazines, and videos, to job search assistance and much more. This day is an opportunity for bookmobiles fans to make their support known by thanking bookmobile staff, writing a letter or e-mail to their libraries, or voicing their support to community leaders. Spread the word – free materials for National Bookmobile Day 2014 are now available for download including:
  • Publicity templates;
  • Logos;
  • Sticker templates;
  • Flyers;
  • Bookmarks.

  • Free Civics and Citizenship Toolkit for libraries that can be used to provide basic information to the immigrant community, develop content for classes, and train staff and volunteers;
  • Citizenship Resource Center providing educational tools and information for citizenship preparation;
  • USCIS Community Relations Contacts For Libraries;
  • Establishing a “Citizenship Corner” by providing a dedicated space for promotional materials;
  • Hosting a naturalization information session;
  • Hosting an administrative naturalization ceremony in your library.
