To assist in this process Chris used Excel to create Collection Manager, a free tool that can analyze the following three types of reports from your automation system:

Number of items in each library collection;
Last year's circulation for each collection;
Number of titles added to each collection during the past year.

Once this information is compiled by Collection Manager, staff can tell which collections to weed, which collections to expand by buying more titles this year than last year, which collections to decrease by buying fewer titles, and even how many titles to purchase in each collection. Find out more about this helpful new tool at the next First Tuesdays, Weeding made easy, where Chris Rippel will demonstrate how to use this free product and how to interpret the results. Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation, which will take place on June 3, 2014, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PDT, lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. A grant? Held a successful event? Have you been promoted or received a degree or been recognized for an achievement? Share your successes with the Washington library community by submitting a brief notice of news (no more than 100 or so words) for the July issue of Alki, the journal of the Washington Library Association (WLA). Digital photos (at least 300 dpi) are welcome. The deadline for article submission for the July issue is Saturday, June 7, 2014. For more information, go to wla.org/alki-instructions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) SCIENCE BOOT CAMP FOR LIBRARIANS It’s almost time for the second annual Western Science Boot Camp for Librarians, an immersive, 2 ½ day event featuring educational presentations about science. And here’s the exciting news – this year, the Camp will be held in Washington State! Registration is now open. But, don’t delay – seats are limited. Conference Details:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) BOOKS FOR AT-RISK CHILDREN Lois Lenski, children’s book author and 1946 Newbery medalist for Strawberry Girl, had a life-long concern that all children have access to good books. In pursuit of this goal she established a foundation to provide grants to agencies serving children in disadvantaged populations. The Lois Lenski Covey Foundation, Inc. annually awards grants to libraries (and other institutions that operate a library) for purchasing books published for young people preschool through grade 8. School libraries, non-traditional libraries operated by charitable [501(c)(3)] and other non-taxable agencies, and bookmobile programs are eligible. The Foundation provides grants to libraries or organizations that serve economically or socially at-risk children, have limited book budgets, and demonstrate real need. Grants for 2014 will range from $500 to $3000 and are specifically for book purchases, and cannot be used for administrative or operational uses. Applications are due Monday, June 16, 2014.
