The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), the Washington State Library, the Department of Early Learning, School’s Out Washington, and the Washington Library Media Association (WLMA) will be convening a group of 10 to 12 teams on October 1, 2014, in Yakima to discuss future summer reading programs. Topics covered will include:

Grant opportunities;
Collaboration;
Strategies for planning successful summer programs.

Community leaders are encouraged to build a team of from 5 to 10 individuals to implement new learning opportunities for children for the summer of 2015 – 2016. Teams can include school librarians, public librarians, administrators, Tribal representatives, literacy coaches, early learning providers, parents, and representatives from other community-based organizations. If you are interested in organizing and/or participating on a team, please take a short survey by going to surveygizmo.com/s3/1650361/Summer-Reading-Program-Survey. The survey will close on Friday, June 13, 2014. Additional information will become available after survey results are in. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) SHARE YOUR LIBRARY INSTRUCTION TIPS AND TRICKS Library instruction sessions are a wonderful way to interact with students in their natural habitat and keep in touch with their classes and assignments. But how do we know if we're using our time effectively and meeting their needs? Come to the Spring Quarterly Instruction Roundtable (QIRT), a venue where Puget Sound librarians can gather to discuss topics related to instruction in an informal setting. Discover practical assessment techniques and tools, and what to do with your assessment data once you've collected it. If you have an example of a tool or technique that has worked (or not worked) for you, please bring it to share! Light snacks will be provided.

For additional information, contact Amber Case at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) DON’T FORGET TO REGISTER FOR DIGITAL DIRECTIONS Digital Directions: Fundamentals of Creating and Managing Digital Collections is coming to Portland next month. Led by a faculty of national experts and experienced digital collection curators, this unique conference will offer 2 ½ days of instruction on basics and best practices for creating good digital objects, collections, and initiatives. Presented by the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) and co-sponsored by the Portland Art Museum, this conference will benefit anyone, including administrators and staff from libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, and other collections-holding organizations nationwide, as well as corporate archivists and government records managers, eager to learn about digitization basics, and planning and managing digital projects. For additional information, visit sos.wa.gov/q/DigDir2014. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) CSLP SEEKS RESEARCHER The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) is a non-profit that seeks to provide a comprehensive, high quality, effective, and efficient summer reading program to public libraries nationwide. The CSLP is currently seeking a researcher to conduct a comprehensive overview of literature from the last ten years and meta-analysis (combining pertinent qualitative and quantitative study data from several selected studies to develop a single conclusion that has greater statistical power) to create a white paper on the value of summer reading in public libraries including:

How children learn to read;
The effects of summer slide on reading skills;
Documented ways of combating summer slide;
What makes a life-long reader;
The implications of this research for summer library programs.
