APPLY NOW 3) LOOKING FOR THE BEST SMALL LIBRARY IN AMERICA 4) LISA LIBRARIES – HELPING COMMUNITIES IN NEED 5) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES – JUNE 23 – JULY 4 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND – CATALOGING WITH RDA Goodbye AACR2 and hello RDA. Get up to speed with Cataloging with RDA, a free, all day workshop where Bill Walker of Amigos will share the latest news on RDA and will give you a thorough overview of the new content standard. Through exercises and hands-on cataloging experiences, participants will receive a thorough grounding in RDA. Topics will include:

  • FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) review;
  • RDA Core elements for description, preferred titles and names;
  • Changes from AACR2;
  • Articulating relationships between resources and entities;
  • RDA Toolkit functionality;
  • Using workflows and mappings to catalog materials with RDA.
Workshop Information:
  • Target audience: Library catalogers with experience in cataloging with AACR2 and MARC;
  • Prerequisites: Working knowledge of AACR2 and experience applying rules to cataloging situations; working knowledge of the MARC 21 and/or OCLC MARC bibliographic formats; participants must have access to the RDA Toolkit through institutional or personal subscription;
  • When: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. PDT;
  • Where:
    • July 15: Bellingham Technical College, Bellingham;
    • July 17: Mid-Columbia Library System, Kennewick Branch, Kennewick.

APPLY NOW The Libri Foundation is a nationwide non-profit organization that donates new, quality, hardcover children’s books to small, rural public libraries throughout the United States. The Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2014 BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grants. To encourage and reward local support of libraries, The Libri Foundation will match any amount of money raised by local sponsors from $200 to $350 on a 2-to-1 ratio. Thus, a library can receive up to $1,050 worth of new children’s books. After a library receives a grant, local sponsors (such as formal or informal Friends groups, civic or social organizations, local businesses, etc.) have 5 months, or longer if necessary, to raise the matching funds. The books donated through the BOOKS FOR CHILDREN program are used for storytelling; toddler, preschool, and after-school programs; summer reading programs; “book buddy” programs in which older children read to younger children; holiday programs; teacher check-out and curriculum support; early childhood development programs; school projects; and just to provide children with a “good read.” The next deadline for BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grants is Friday, August 15, 2014. For additional information, go to librifoundation.org/apps.html. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) LOOKING FOR THE BEST SMALL LIBRARY IN AMERICA Library Journal’s annual award for the Best Small Library in America, cosponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, honors the U.S. public library that most profoundly demonstrates outstanding service to populations of 25,000 or less. The winning library will receive:
  • A $20,000 cash award;
  • A feature story in the February 1, 2015 issue of Library Journal;
  • Membership and conference costs for two library representatives to attend the Public Library Association (PLA) Biannual Conference in 2016 in Denver, CO;
  • A gala reception at the conference.
Two finalist libraries will be awarded $10,000 each, a special mention in Library Journal, and membership and conference costs for two library representatives to attend the PLA conference and gala reception in 2016. Nominations must be postmarked by Wednesday, September 10, 2014. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) LISA LIBRARIES – HELPING COMMUNITIES IN NEED Are you affiliated with an organization in a low-income or underserved area that needs a small library, needs to rebuild or add to a library, or serves children who would benefit by being given new books to take home? Or do you know of such an organization? The Lisa Libraries donates new children's books and small libraries to organizations that work with kids in poor and underserved areas. Started by author Ann M. Martin and friends to honor and memorialize children's book editor Lisa Novak, the Lisa Libraries supplements under-filled shelves and also provides books to many children who may never have owned a book before. Some of the libraries have been established at day-care centers, prison visiting areas for children of incarcerated parents, homeless shelters, battered women’s shelters, and after-school programs. Since its founding in 1990, the Lisa Libraries has contributed over 350,000 books to nonprofit organizations across the country. In general, the Lisa Libraries has a strong interest in supporting small, grass-roots organizations. As a matter of policy, the Foundation makes grants only to organizations that do not discriminate against people seeking services or employment based on race, sex, religion, age, sexual preference, or physical ability.
