Museums and libraries, with their aim to create high quality early learning opportunities for children in the context of family and community, can play a significant role in this outcome. As trusted, accessible community institutions with regular early literacy programming for children and caregivers, we know that public libraries, in particular, can impact children in their early learning years. Until very recently, a burning question has been – to what extent? Please join the first in a series of webinars, Partnering with Libraries and Museums – Innovative Early Learning Partnerships and Strategies, co-hosted by BUILD and the Institute for Museums and Libraries (IMLS), focused on innovative partnerships and strategies being utilized by libraries and museums to support early learning and development efforts. The webinar will be held on Wednesday, July 9, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. PDT, and will introduce successful tools and methodologies that library practitioners can now apply to the development and delivery of their early learning programming and measurably impact early childhood literacy skills in doing so. The tools and methodologies were developed and piloted through two IMLS National Leadership Grants known as Project VIEWS, awarded to the University of Washington iSchool, in collaboration with the Washington State Library through their IMLS-funded project, Connecting the Dots, and a statewide organization of Washington libraries dedicated to early learning, the Early Learning Public Library Partnership (ELPLP), leveraging strategic connections to local library systems, state government, and Washington-based early learning organizations and standards, from 2009 – 2014. The presenters are Diane Hutchins, Project Manager for WSL’s Connecting the Dots project, and Chrystie Hill, Librarian and Community-Builder, Community Relations Director at OCLC. They will explore the answers to the question: Can we empower all staff working with young children to utilize the tools and techniques developed by Project VIEWS to provide early learning programs that have been scientifically proven to help children learn to read?
