Projects should focus on providing training and resources to directly enhance the skills of patrons. This will improve their ability to navigate an increasingly digital world. Digital Skills Training grant applicants are encouraged to utilize project partners. Project partners could include other libraries and community organizations such as non-profits, hospitals, credit unions, and local businesses. Projects should meet at least one of the following objectives:

  • Encourage the development of skills required to communicate and perform business transactions in a digital environment (applying for health insurance, using online banking, etc.).
  • Use diverse technologies appropriately to retrieve quality information (accessing library and other quality e-resources via computers, tablets and smartphones, etc.).
  • Support the development of skills to communicate and work with others or to boost employability in a digital world (setting up and using an email account, online job searching, etc.).
  • Use productivity software and other technologies (word-processing, spreadsheets, graphics manipulation, etc.).
Overall funding to support this grant cycle is $450,000. This grant cycle has a limit of $50,000 per library system. It is anticipated that nine (9) or more applicants may receive awards. Awards will be made contingent upon availability of funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and distribution of those funds by the Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State. Washington State Library staff are available to answer questions from potential applicants. Staff can help them determine if an applicant should adjust or proceed with their proposal, or modify their budget before they expend the resources necessary to fully plan the project and prepare a full grant application. Download the guidelines and application form in Word or PDF format: http://www.sos.wa.gov/library/libraries/grants/grants.aspx --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) 2014-2015 WASHINGTON RURAL HERITAGE GRANTS AWARDED Congratulations to the latest group of Washington libraries and museum receiving 2014-2015 LSTA grant awards through the Washington Rural Heritage initiative (washingtonruralheritage.org)! A total of 16 Washington institutions (including eight public libraries administering sub-grants) will collaborate to digitize historically significant primary sources over the next year. Those institutions are:
  • Columbia County Rural Library District, in partnership with the Blue Mountain Heritage Society and the Dayton Historic Depot.
  • Deming Library (Whatcom County Library System), in partnership with the Nesset Family Trust.
  • Kettle Falls Public Library (Libraries of Stevens County), in partnership with Colville National Forest.
  • Medical Lake Library (Spokane County Library District), in partnership with the Medical Lake Historical Society.
  • Orcas Island Public Library, in partnership with the Orcas Island Historical Museum.
  • Puyallup Public Library.
  • Roslyn Public Library, in partnership with the Roslyn Museum.
  • Whitman County Library, in partnership with the Staley Museum.

Libraries currently participating in grant-funded digitization projects this year (FY2013) are busy wrapping up their new collections as of this writing. For more information, contact Evan Robb, Project Manager, [email protected], (360) 704-5228. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) KID AND PARENT FRIENDLY SUBJECT HEADINGS FOR PICTURE BOOKS By arranging picture books in popular subject categories, King County Library System empowers children and adults to quickly find the picture books they are most interested in reading. A few of the fourteen subject categories are Bedtime, Dinosaurs, Things That Go, and Sparkly. KCLS used a research approach to discover what patrons were trying to find. Cecelia McGowan, Children’s Services Coordinator, will share lessons learned in this free webinar on August 5th from 9 a.m. to 10:00 PDT. For instructions on joining the presentation, visit sos.wa.gov/q/FirstTuesdays. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) NEEDS ASSESSMENT RFP RE-RELEASE The Library Development Program of the Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State (OSOS), announces the re-release of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a Needs Assessment of its Statewide Database Licensing (SDL) Project. The assessment activities to be completed include surveys, interviews, comparative usage data analysis, and so forth. Ideally, the work will be completed by December 12, 2014. We encourage proposals from consultants, graduate students (working individually or in a group), or anyone else with the skills or experience required. The RFP is available on the OSOS Current Procurements page: sos.wa.gov/q/p and via Washington's Electronic Business Solution (WEBS): sos.wa.gov/q/webs. The deadline for submitting proposals is 4:00 p.m. August 18, 2014. The recommended deadline for submitting a notice of intent to propose, which insures receipt of any additional communications regarding this procurement, is August 5, 2014. Voters without Internet access can print a replacement ballot using the computers, printers, and Internet access available at their local library. The website a voter would use is www.sos.wa.gov/elections/myvote/ Log in with your name and date of birth. It’s very user friendly. Please help us spread the word. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) TRANSFORMING LIBRARY SPACES FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OCLC WebJunction has created a resource guide titled Transforming Library Spaces for Community Engagement. This guide is the result of a one-year collaborative effort between WebJunction and two pilot libraries, Bellingham Public Library and Whatcom County Library System, with support from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. This collaboration was designed to explore best practices for transforming library space to support community goals, encourage discussion, and inspire service delivery in a way that enhances public engagement. An electronic versionof this guide is available to all libraries at WebJunction.org, along with several other space planning resources. Print copies have been mailed to every public library system director in Washington.
