The theme “Prism of Possibilities: Lighting the Future” reflects a conference of information, ideas, and inspiration. Registration is now open with early bird pricing ending October 1. For application details: http://www.wla.org/wale-scholarship-2014 WALE is a Washington Library Association Interest Group. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) FREE ONLINE SKILLPORT CLASSES NOW AVAILABLE Washington State Library is partnering with WebJunction to offer additional courses to all library staff in Washington. These non-library specific courses are delivered by Skillport. Funding for these courses is provided by WSL through the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). There are 450 courses available including: Dealing with Irrational Customers and Escalating Complaints; Improving Your Emotional Intelligence Skills: Self-awareness and Self-management; Giving Feedback; Leadership Essentials: Motivating Employees; and Creating a Positive Attitude. To access your free Skillport classes, follow these instructions:

Click on the Register link near the bottom of the page. Complete all fields of the registration form, making sure to select your correct State Library Sponsor. Affirm and submit the form. Years ago, if you were in a position of authority, you could just announce what needed to be done and assume it would be carried out. But times have changed. Now, as organizations have expanded and have become increasingly more complex, no matter what the formal hierarchies are, people must work with each other across reporting lines. It doesn’t work to say, “Do it because I told you so.” Leading from any position requires higher evolutionary leadership and influencing skills. In this training, participants will learn leadership concepts and frameworks, including emotional intelligence; effective communication, leading teams, and motivating others. Participants will have the opportunity to practice skills and develop action/ development learning plans. Presented by Cyndi Schaeffer, King County Employee Training. Diane Hutchins will serve as WSL representative on Early Learning Public Library Partnership (ELPLP) steering committee. Will Stuivenga has been appointed to the American Library Association’s Digital Content Working Group (DCWG). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) 2014 LIBRARY OF CONGRESS NATIONAL BOOK FESTIVAL The 2014 Library of Congress National Book Festival will take place Saturday, August 30 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. (the other Washington). The 14^th annual Festival’s theme is “Stay Up With A Good Book”. The Festival is free and open to the public. Washington will be represented on the Discover Great Places Through Reading brochure by the book The Trouble with May Amelia by Jennifer Holm.
