Wednesday, October 1, 2014; 12:30 – 1:30 pm

In this Washington State Archaeology Month presentation, Dale Sadler, Cultural Resources Specialist, and Duane Colt Denfeld, Architectural Historian, of Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) Cultural Resources Program will examine a fascinating part of Washington State’s history which was discovered during renovations in 2011 at Madigan Army Medical Center on JBLM in Pierce County. At that time thousands of phonograph records and other musical artifacts were found hidden behind a gymnasium wall. Research identified them as recordings produced by the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) from the World War II years through 1959. The recordings had been broadcast on the Madigan General Hospital (later Madigan Army Hospital) Bedside Network station, which used the call letters KMGH and later KMAH. In their talk the speakers will focus on the sound artifacts (transcription discs and acetate recordings) and other related media objects (radio scripts, record sleeve annotations, etc.) that were uncovered in 2011. Some of these artifacts will be on display and the actual transcribed audio used to supplement the presentation. It will be a wonderful opportunity to actually hear the past. This program is free and open to all. You are welcome to bring lunch. Coffee will be served. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE 2015 The Letters About Literature annual contest has begun! Please encourage the teachers and students in grades 4 - 12 at your school or in your library area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well. Level 3 (grades 9-12) entries must be postmarked by December 15th.
  • Level 1 (grades 4-6) and Level 2 (grades 7-8) entries must be postmarked by January 15, 2015.
This is the tenth year Washington State Library has sponsored Letters About Literature. For additional information, contact Crystal Lentz at [email protected] or 360.704.5275. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) FREE BOOKS FOR WASHINGTON LIBRARIES Thanks to the generosity of Kitsap Regional Library, Pierce County Library, Seattle Public Library Foundation, Timberland Regional Library, and Walla Walla Public Library, Washington State Library has the following titles to distribute for reading club kits or as a community read to any public or school library within Washington State:
  • For All of Us, One Today by Richard Blanco (poetry in English and Spanish) – 483 copies
  • Stories for Boys: A Memoir by Gregory Martin (nonfiction) – 96 copies
  • The Paris Wife by Paula McLain (fiction) – 96 copies
  • Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin (nonfiction) – 23 copies
  • The Leisure Seeker by Michael Zadorin (fiction) – 80 copies
Usually a minimum order of 5 copies of the same title is required but, due to special circumstances, we are offering a mix and match special on these titles, minimum of 5 total books per order. These will be distributed on a first come, first served basis at no charge to the requestor.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) GEOSCIENCE LIBRARIANSHIP 101 – FREE SEMINAR Come and join professional librarians, information specialists, and students in library and information science for "Geoscience Librarianship 101" -- a free one-day seminar held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America (GSA). The seminar will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014, from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C. The seminar provides an opportunity to network with geoscience professionals on hot button topics, such as, collection development, reference, instructional services, maps, and geographical information systems (GIS) are discussed by experienced geoscience librarians:
