Volume 11, January 22, 2015 for the WSL Updates mailing list Topics include: 1) SDL NEEDS ASSESSMENT SURVEYS 2) 2015 WLA CONFERENCE REGISTRATION NOW OPEN 3) BUILDING BRIDGES TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE 4) IMLS ANNOUNCES SPARKS! IGNITION LIBRARY GRANTS 5) COMING SOON IN OREGON 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) SDL NEEDS ASSESSMENT SURVEYS The Washington State Library’s Statewide Database Licensing (SDL) project announces the release of two important needs assessment surveys, one for library staff, and one for library users. All library staff who are aware of the library’s electronic resources, especially research databases, are encouraged to take the staff survey, and all Washington libraries are encouraged to promote the user survey to their clientele, through their web sites, social media, patron newsletters, and any other appropriate media or opportunities. The surveys will be available through Friday, February 20, 2015. Here are the survey links:

The library audience for both surveys includes all types of libraries that participate in SDL: public, academic, including community and technical colleges, hospital and research libraries, and K-12 schools, both public and private. In the case of K-12 schools, the end user survey is intended for classroom teachers and administrators, rather than students, but college and university students are strongly encouraged to take the survey. In promulgating the survey links, be sure to notice that they use the secure https protocol. Visit sos.wa.gov/q/SDL for additional information, including suggestions for promoting the survey to your users. For questions about the surveys or the SDL needs assessment process, please contact SDL project manager Will Stuivenga [email protected] or 360-704-5217. Thank you in advance for your participation and cooperation in making these surveys a success. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) 2015 WLA CONFERENCE REGISTRATION NOW OPEN Registration for the 2015 Washington Library Association Conference is now open. The Conference will take place Wednesday, April 15 – Friday, April 17 at the Tulalip Resort in Marysville, Washington. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) BUILDING BRIDGES TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE The first annual Washington State Higher Education Building Bridges Technology Conference is scheduled for March 12 and 13, 2015 at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park in Spokane. IGNITION LIBRARY GRANTS The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is now accepting applications for Sparks! Ignition Grants for Libraries, a small grants program which encourages libraries and archives to prototype and evaluate innovations that result in new tools, products, services, or organizational practices. The grants enable grantees to undertake activities that involve risk and require them to share project results–whether they succeed or fail–to provide valuable information to the library field and help improve the ways libraries serve their communities. Have questions? IMLS staff members are available by phone and email to discuss general issues relating to the Sparks! Ignition Grants for Libraries program. Please contact Mary Alice Ball at 202-653-4730 or [email protected] or Tim Carrigan at 202-653-4639 or [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) COMING SOON IN OREGON Look south, Washington conference-goers -- check out these upcoming conferences: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK January 26 January 27
