The purpose of this grant cycle is to empower libraries as exploration centers for youth. This grant cycle enables public and tribal libraries to apply for a Mindstorm Lego® Robotics kit or an Eggbot Robotics kit. WSL expects youth will increase their science, technology, engineering, and math skills through interaction with the kits. The contents of the Mindstorm Lego® Robotics kit and the Eggbot Robotics kits can be found in the third section of the grant guidelines.

This grant cycle is made possible through funding provided to the Washington State Library by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) PACIFIC NORTHWEST DIGITAL COLLECTIONS SUMMIT FINAL REPORT AVAILABLE In March 2015, the Oregon and Washington State Libraries co-hosted a summit of approximately 50 library, archives, and museum professionals to explore avenues for increased collaborative digitization throughout the region. The one-day meeting, held at the Oregon State Library in Salem, Oregon, featured presentations about collaborative projects at local, state, regional, and national levels and allowed participants to discuss topics ranging from leadership and funding of collaborative projects to metadata standards and shared infrastructure for digital projects. The final recommendations from the summit, based on discussions held throughout the day, include:
  1. Host a summit of funding agencies to work toward adoption of shared standards for digitization and metadata.
  2. Explore support for a shared regional digital content system.
  3. Support existing local and regional collaborative digitization projects, as well as existing statewide newspaper digitization programs in both Washington and Oregon.
  4. Develop various written materials (toolkits, outreach materials, etc.) focused on broad community participation and establish a shared email list for distribution of materials and project updates.
  5. Encourage institutions in Washington and Oregon to form one or more initial collaborative project(s) focused on eventual participation in the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA).
  6. Support the option of participation in the Orbis Cascade Alliance’s (OCA) Content Creation & Dissemination (CCD) Program for OCA members.

Changes in libraries can have a large impact on staff, customers, and other stakeholders. Something as small as rearranging a few chairs and tables can lead to strained interactions if change is not communicated well. What about the larger changes? The tools and processes for communicating change are similar whether the change is minuscule or enormous. Whether you are dealing with customers who have a hard time adjusting to changes in their environment (e.g. rearranged furniture) or staff who are trying to maintain high levels of service in the midst of major changes (e.g. moving to a new building), good communication is imperative at every level of the library.

Refreshments provided for participants by local hosts. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) OUTSIDE THE LINES COMING IN SEPTEMBER Outside the Lines: Libraries Reintroduced is a global initiative demonstrating the creativity and innovation happening in libraries. Organizations around the world will participate in this week-long celebration September 13 – 19, 2015. Large, small, and in-between libraries of all types are invited to join in the Outside the Lines celebration:
  • Host an event or campaign that gets people thinking and talking about libraries in a different way; Showcase the library out in the community as well as in the library;
  • Highlight how your library is relevant to people’s lives;
  • Represent your community – get people engaged;
  • Have fun!
To learn more about ALA’s advocacy and public awareness efforts, visit: ilovelibraries.org. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) GREAT STORIES CLUB GRANTS AVAILABLE The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office invites libraries to apply for the Great Stories Club, a reading and discussion program for at-risk teens. Eligible libraries are located within or working in partnership with organizations that serve at-risk youth, such as alternative high schools, juvenile justice organizations, homeless shelters, foster care agencies, teen parenting programs, residential treatment facilities and other nonprofit and community agencies. Up to 50 grants will be awarded. The theme for the current round of grants is “Hack the Feed: Media, Resistance, Revolution,” and the books are “Feed” by M.T. Anderson, “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, and “March: Books One” by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell.
