Pierce County Library System (PCLS) decided to implement a one-desk solution, where more questions are answered by paraprofessionals, freeing librarians for other activities. To preserve a high level of customer service, PCLS developed “Reference Triage,” a program in which paraprofessional staff are trained to answer 80% of patrons’ questions. This webinar will describe how Reference Triage was developed, taught, evaluated, and implemented.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) GAINING STEAM WITH LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3® Gaining STEAM is an outreach program provided by the Washington State Library (WSL) in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) as a tool to help enrich Washington State communities through the libraries that serve them. Our goal is to advance meaningful and relevant learning opportunities relating to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) technologies for library staff throughout the state.

Lego Mindstorms EV3® is offered as a hands-on 6-hour robotics building and programming workshop for library staff around Washington from January through March 2016.

WSL is hosting a webinar on Free Computer Science Instructional Resources for Washington Educators: Microsoft Imagine Academy and DreamSpark for grades 6 - 12 and Community & Technical College Programs on January 28, 2016 from 3:00 – 4:15 p.m. PST

Through a partnership with Washington State Library (WSL) and Microsoft, school and campus libraries can provide free access to courses on Digital Literacy, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Technology Associate, and Computer Science. Both instructors and students can use these programs for free. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE CONTEST The annual Letters About Literature contest has begun! Please encourage teachers and students in grades 4 - 8 at your school or in your library service area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well.

Level 1 (grades 4-6) and Level 2 (grades 7-8) entries must be postmarked by January 11, 2016.

The 23rd annual writing contest for young readers is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, with additional support from gifts to the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, which promotes the contest through its affiliate Centers for the Book, State Libraries, and other organizations. This is the 11th year that Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, has sponsored Letters About Literature as part of Washington Reads.
