Elections:

Two years ago, we hosted a community meeting at the Coupeville Library to help us gather information to develop a library district-wide capital facilities plan. The words from Coupeville residents spurred the Coupeville Library Board and the Sno-Isle Libraries to develop a proposal to expand and remodel the existing 20-year-old building. Buildings:

Awards:

The Reardan Memorial Library has received 65 new children’s books, valued at $1,050, purchased with a grant from the Libri Foundation. Matching funds for the grant were provided by the Paul G. Allen Foundation through the Washington State Library. (with photo) (Davenport Times, 7-10-08)

The Libri Foundation has awarded the Lopez Island Library a $1,000 book grant through the Books for Children program. The Foundation supports the concept that children who learn to enjoy reading at an early age continue to read throughout their lives. (Island’s Weekly Newspaper [Lopez Island], 7-15-08)

Programs and Displays:

When the newly built Teen Space at the Longview Public Library started smelling a little too much like teen spirit, Jan Hanson knew she was going to have to move Xbox rockers to a new locale. Summer Reading:

Sure, they’re making sure that come September, their reading skills have not lost a step, but don’t tell that to the more than 30 kids at the Discover Summer reading program at the Sumner Library. Pierce County libraries are aiming to give children of all ages the reading but with a slew of summer programs. Bug-themed programs are taking over 17 county libraries this summer including bug drawing with a cartoonist and an insect safari with hundreds of bugs. (The Herald [Puyallup], 7-10-08)

The Puyallup Public Library has an ambitious series of weekly activities and summer reading contests lined up. These programs are not only fun but studies show that summer reading helps children maintain proficiency and reading skills between grades. (The Herald [Puyallup], 7-10-08)
