July 4 has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of the Fourth of July dates to the 18th century and the American Revolution.

Representatives of the 13 colonies declared their independence form Great Britain in June 1776.

While the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, the Declaration of Independence was drafted by Thomas Jefferson and two days later adopted by delegates on July 4.

Secretary of State Wyman and office wishes all a safe celebration of our nation’s 237th year of independence!
