Volume 10, November 6, 2014 for the WSL Updates mailing list Topics include: 1) WORKFORCE INNOVATION AND OPPORTUNITY ACT 2) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE 2015 3) FREE BOOKS FOR WASHINGTON LIBRARIES 4) EARLY LEARNING STEM INSTITUTE 5) CAYAS FALL WORKSHOP REGISTRATION OPEN 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) WORKFORCE INNOVATION AND OPPORTUNITY ACT The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) allows public and community college libraries to be considered additional One-Stop (Worksource) partners and authorizes adult education and literacy activities provided by public and community college libraries as an allowable statewide employment and training activity. The modification of the Workforce Investment Act to WIOA (IO = Innovation and Opportunity) prohibits federal supervision or control over selection of library resources and authorizes adult education and literacy activities provided by public libraries as an allowable statewide employment and training activity. Additionally, the law defines digital literacy skills as a workforce preparation activity. The American Library Association hosted a webinar about WIOA on October 27. Please encourage the teachers and students in grades 4 - 12 at your school or in your library area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well.

Level 3 (grades 9-12) entries must be postmarked by December 15^th.
Level 1 (grades 4-6) and Level 2 (grades 7-8) entries must be postmarked by January 15, 2015.

This is the tenth year Washington State Library has sponsored Letters About Literature. For additional information, contact Crystal Lentz at [email protected] or 360.704.5275. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) FREE BOOKS FOR WASHINGTON LIBRARIES Thanks to the generosity of Kitsap Regional Library, Pierce County Library, and Seattle Public Library Foundation, Washington State Library has the following titles to distribute for reading club kits or as a community read to any public or school library within Washington State:

For All of Us, One Today by Richard Blanco (poetry in English and Spanish) – 240 copies
The Leisure Seeker by Michael Zadorin (fiction) – 24 copies
The Paris Wife by Paula McLain (fiction) – 50 copies
Stories for Boys: A Memoir by Gregory Martin (nonfiction) – 74 copies

Usually a minimum order of 5 copies of the same title is required but we are offering a mix and match special on these titles, minimum of 5 total books per order. These will be distributed on a first come, first served basis at no charge to the requestor.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) EARLY LEARNING STEM INSTITUTE The 2014 Early Learning STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Institute, presented by the Early Learning Public Library Partnership (ELPLP) and the Washington State Head Start/ECEAP (Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program) Association will include sessions on the following topics:

Math Common Core and its relation to early learning;
Project VIEWS2 and the benefits of storytime;
Integrating STEM in the classroom.
