The “Third grade Reading Bill” (ESSB 5946), which the Washington State Legislature passed in the 2013 session, requires the principal/designee, teacher and parent to meet before the end of the 2014/2015 school year to discuss strategies to assist students who are below the basic-level on the new 3rd grade English Language Arts assessment to improve reading skills during the summer. Assistant Superintendent of Early Learning Robert Butts will describe the requirements of the bill. David Tudor, Curriculum director for the Washougal School district, will describe a different type of summer learning program which may satisfy the requirements of the ESSB 5946. David will relate how the district has leveraged a variety of funding sources, volunteers, community mental health, and federal services to support a summer enrichment program that provides comprehensive and engaging opportunities for students, families, and community members. Students served range from pre-K to high school students. A highlight of the presentation will be how the district has leveraged and trained over 80 volunteers from the ecumenical community to support these important extended learning opportunities.
