The guest poet was Elizabeth Austen, who began a two-year term as Washington state poet laureate Feb. 1. Austen, with the sponsorship of Humanities Washington and the Washington State Arts Commission, has made a commitment to visit and share poetry in all of Washington’s 39 counties at least once during her term. The event is free and open to everyone 21 years and older. Local women who achieved leadership roles will talk about their own experiences and accomplishments navigating roles that often are dominated by men. Patrons can find facts, fiction and fun in books, magazines, recordings and the Internet. While the local libraries are places to access information and check out books, they offer much more. The libraries serve the community, offering family activities, educational opportunities, and social and cultural events. Devin Lentz and Trenton Snyder work together to build a house. It’s all the same game, and kids in the Lynden library’s Minecraft Club play it every week. Chelan library overrun by zombies, fiends of all kind – peace is restored to community by 8 p.m. Last Saturday’s annual library Halloween carnival is a smashing pumpkin success. More than one hundred costumed kids – and adults – invaded normally placid book rooms for wild revelry, candy and fun. Children will explore making fun chemical reactions. The events are offered at several Library locations in November. Library events are free and open to the public. (The Skanner, Seattle, 10/29/14) Food for Fines program kicks off Nov. 1 at libraries The popular Mid-Columbia Libraries’ Food for Fines program returns Nov. 1. Customers can pay off their fines with donations of nonperishable food items through the program.
