  • Passionate about early literacy at public libraries?
  • Interested in enhancing your current approach to storytime planning and delivery for children five years of age and younger?
  • Eager to work collaboratively online with your peers from other libraries to share ideas and experiences that build a growing community of practice?
If so, you are invited to become a part of the Supercharged Storytimes community through a new program offered to public library staff in Washington free of charge. Thanks to a partnership between OCLC, the Washington State Library, and Thrive Washington, and with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Supercharged Storytimes provides methods to engage children in storytimes, using tools and approaches that have been confirmed by University of Washington iSchool’s Project VIEWS2 research to directly support development of early literacy skills in children 0-5 years old. The program will introduce up to 100 public library staff from across Washington State to Supercharged Storytimes methods through a structured four-week online orientation, beginning Monday, April 6, 2015, and then continue to support participants through an online community as they implement Supercharged Storytimes in their own libraries following the orientation. The online community, hosted by WebJunction, will offer a place for participants to discuss their experience and exchange ideas, tips, and resources around Supercharged Storytimes. For more information please review the Participant Overview. Interested in participating? Submit a Statement of Interest for this opportunity by Friday, February 27, 2015. Questions? Contact Liz Morris, Project Coordinator, at [email protected]. Please share this opportunity with your colleagues. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) IYOUTHCON 2015
  • iYouthCon 2015: iDentity takes place on Saturday, February 21, 2015 from 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. in Mary Gates Hall on the University of Washington campus, Seattle.
Come for an engaging day of exploration, discussion, and connection with UW graduate students, iSchool faculty and staff, and practicing librarians. The annual conference provides relevant and inclusive sessions for those interested in services to children and youth, exploring new modes of practice, and celebrating the wonderful community of youth and children’s media. This year’s iYouthCon explores iDentity, a theme on how youth form identity through emerging technology, through the stories they hear and share, and through their communities. Session topics include STEM in schools and libraries, diversity curriculum in rural schools, community building, and teen engagement. The keynote will be delivered by the inspiring Erin Jones, Director of Advancement via Individual Determination with Tacoma Public Schools. In 2013, Erin was honored by the White House as an educational leader for her work in encouraging achievement of African-American students. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) CHARITY & NONPROFIT TRAINING SESSIONS Educational opportunities for nonprofit organizations are available from the Charities Program, Corporations and Charities Division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
