  • Passionate about early literacy at public libraries?
  • Interested in enhancing your current approach to storytime planning and delivery for children five years of age and younger?
  • Eager to work collaboratively online with your peers from other libraries to share ideas and experiences that build a growing community of practice?
If so, you are invited to become a part of the Supercharged Storytimes community through a new program offered to public library staff in Washington free of charge. Thanks to a partnership between OCLC, the Washington State Library, and Thrive Washington, and with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Supercharged Storytimes provides methods to engage children in storytimes, using tools and approaches that have been confirmed by University of Washington iSchool’s Project VIEWS2 research to directly support development of early literacy skills in children 0-5 years old. The program will introduce up to 100 public library staff from across Washington State to Supercharged Storytimes methods through a structured four-week online orientation, beginning Monday, April 6, 2015, and then continue to support participants through an online community as they implement Supercharged Storytimes in their own libraries following the orientation. The online community, hosted by WebJunction, will offer a place for participants to discuss their experience and exchange ideas, tips, and resources around Supercharged Storytimes. Please share this opportunity with your colleagues and networks. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) SDL NEEDS ASSESSMENT SURVEYS As a reminder, the Washington State Library’s Statewide Database Licensing (SDL) project is conducting a formal needs assessment, with two surveys, one for library staff, and one for library users. All library staff who are aware of the library’s electronic resources, especially research databases, are encouraged to take the staff survey, and all Washington libraries are encouraged to promote the user survey to their clientele, through their web sites, social media, patron newsletters, and any other appropriate media or opportunities. The surveys will be available through Friday, February 20, 2015. Here are the survey links: The library audience for both surveys includes all types of libraries that participate in SDL: public libraries, private academic, community and technical colleges, hospital and research libraries, and K-12 schools, both public and private. In the case of K-12 schools, the end user survey is intended for classroom teachers and administrators, rather than students, but college and university students are strongly encouraged to take the survey. In promulgating the survey links, be sure to notice that they use the secure https protocol. Thank you in advance for your participation and cooperation in making these surveys a success. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) FREE MRSC WEBINARS AVAILABLE Municipal Research and Services Center (MRSC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the success of local governments throughout Washington, offers training via free webinars. The next webinar, How to Make Better Use of MRSC’s Tools and Services, takes place on February 24 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. PST This training will focus on using MRSC’s new website. Previous MRSC webinars are archived and available for viewing. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) CALL FOR WOMEN OF LIBRARY HISTORY SUBMISSIONS Women of Library History is a Women’s History Month Project of the Feminist Task Force of the American Library Association. This will be the third year of posting stories about women who have made librarianship and/or their communities better. Please read the official Call for Submissions and announcement blog post.
