Kidlit publishers do not reflect these population dynamics. Do library shelves and programs? All young readers need mirrors and windows that both reflect and open the world around them. Library materials and programs are important in helping children make cross-cultural connections and develop the skills necessary to function in a pluralistic society. Resources are readily available for librarians to meet these needs. Instructions and Login for First Tuesdays session Questions? Please contact Carolyn Petersen, Washington State Library, at 360-570-5560 or [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) EXPLORING TECHNOLOGY: ET KITS GRANT CYCLE OPEN Exploring Technology: ET kits grant cycle from the Washington State Library (WSL) is open. The purpose of this grant cycle is to empower libraries as exploration centers for youth. This grant cycle enables public and tribal libraries to apply for a Mindstorm Lego® Robotics kit or an Eggbot Robotics kit. WSL expects youth will increase their science, technology, engineering, and math skills through interaction with the kits. The contents of the Mindstorm Lego® Robotics kit and the Eggbot Robotics kits can be found in the third section of the grant guidelines.

This grant cycle is made possible through funding provided to the Washington State Library by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) ZINE CONTEST ENTRIES DUE AUGUST 31 Only one month until zine contest entries are due! Themes to be explored may include: attracting more patrons; generating and broadcasting an exciting library narrative; support of early learning; and bridging the digital divide. We will make fast progress on problems facing libraries and librarians while learning a new approach to handle any challenge that arises. The three-part series will be practical and seriously playful for all levels of library staff and management. Teams or small groups are encouraged, however, individual participation also works.
