Please encourage teachers and students in grades 4 - 12 at your school or in your library service area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well.

  • Level 3 (grades 9-12) entries must be postmarked by December 4, 2015.
  • Level 1 (grades 4-6) and Level 2 (grades 7-8) entries must be postmarked by January 11, 2016.

The 23rd annual writing contest for young readers is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, with additional support from gifts to the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, which promotes the contest through its affiliate Centers for the Book, State Libraries and other organizations. This is the 11th year that Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, has sponsored Letters About Literature as part of Washington Reads. Is your board wondering about technology issues, budgeting, or property taxes? We’re looking for ideas on which topics would be of most interest and which times would work best (Saturdays, afternoons & evenings or?).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) TECHNOLOGY VACANCY ON LIBRARY COUNCIL OF WASHINGTON Here’s an opportunity to work with your peers in the Washington library community; advise Washington State Library on how to use federal LSTA funds; and share your thoughts on how information technology can be advanced and better utilized in various types of libraries.
  • The Library Council of Washington is looking to fill one Technology position which will be open on January 1, 2016.
  • The position focuses on information technology and/or digital library services.

Service on Library Council includes reimbursement of travel expenses. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) LEADING FROM ANY POSITION: CREATING LEARNING LIBRARIES IN 5 EASY LESSONS There are creative, yet pragmatic, approaches that have been proven effective in helping libraries embrace innovation. Becky Schreiber and John Shannon, Schreiber Shannon Associates, have been working with libraries nationally and internationally to implement these processes. In this experiential workshop, participants will:
  • Explore the concepts of Leading From Any Position to take initiative and garner influence regardless of organizational authority
  • Examine practical applications of Senge’s five disciplines
  • Apply the disciplines to each participant’s unique situation
  • Plan strategies for using the concepts to create a collaborative culture
  • Experience the fun of creating together by treating ambiguity as an opportunity for group innovation
