Tuesday, April 5, 2016 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PDT Community organizations, libraries, and publishers are uniquely positioned to engage and inform the public around food and nutrition. Hear an overview of America's eating habits and the importance of food literacy (knowing both what and how we eat) and learn how libraries are becoming community food hubs through collections, programs, library gardens, community-supported agriculture (CSAs) and farmers’ market outreach, and lending seeds and tools. Food-themed programming can also be a great way to reach new patrons—in KCLS, 18% of those attending “food” programs were first-timers. Learn how to build not just a better food community, but a better community through food. Instructions and Login for First Tuesdays session First Tuesdays webinars are designed as a continuing-education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State. The special-subject presentations, lasting about 60 minutes, are recorded so that others may listen at their own convenience. Questions? Please contact Carolyn Petersen at 360-570-5560. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) A THIRD GAINING STEAM WORKSHOP ADDED Washington State Library announces additional Gaining STEAM workshops – a Lego Mindstorms EV3® experience. Due to popular demand, three more Gaining STEAM workshops have been scheduled:

Gaining STEAM workshops are offered as a hands-on 6-hour robotics building and programming workshop to prepare library staff to host programs in their communities. The workshops are for beginners; no previous robotics or programming experience is needed. Library staff from all types of libraries are welcome. Starting in May 2016, the Lego Mindstorms EV3® kits used for these training workshops will be offered for circulation to public and tribal libraries around the state. Details on how to reserve the kits for local library programs will be announced later this spring. Our goal is to provide useful and fun Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) training for library staff throughout the state. Gaining STEAM is an outreach program provided by the Washington State Library in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). It provides another tool to enrich Washington State communities through the libraries that serve them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) HIGHLINE COLLEGE ONLINE LIBRARY COURSES Highline College Library & Information Services Program is offering:
  • LIBR 132 "Serving Diverse Communities" online for five credits during spring 2016.
The course is an examination of library services to diverse populations including, but not limited to, ethnicity, national origin, language, gender, age, disability (human exceptionalities), and sexual orientation. The course focuses on proactively developing collections and services that foster an atmosphere of inclusion and meet the needs of all the library's users.
  • LIBR 160 "Computers in Libraries" online for five credits during spring 2016.
This course is an introduction to existing and emerging library-related technologies with a focus on effective use of catalogs, databases, the Internet, integrated library systems, library websites, accessing and downloading various formats electronically, troubleshooting, and assisting patrons. Issues include the roles computers play in libraries and their impact as well as electronic communication, netiquette, security, ADA, working in networked environments, hardware and software, and developing technology fluency. Students will also learn to transfer from situation to situation, adapting to new technologies as they emerge. Classes begin Monday, April 4, 2016. Please contact [email protected] for more information. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) WALE CONFERENCE PROPOSALS WANTED Program proposals are now being accepted for the 2016 WALE Conference, to be held October 24-26, 2016 in beautiful Chelan, Washington. This is the 25th annual event for the Washington Library Employees (WALE), an interest group of the Washington Library Association. All proposals from library staff, advocates, and partner organizations will be considered. Please reach out to local dynamic presenters or share your own skills and experience by leading a Conference Session or a Preconference Workshop.
  • Proposals are due no later than Friday, April 8, 2016.
  • Primary Contacts will be notified of proposal status by Friday, April 22, 2016.
  • All Preconference Workshops will be held Monday, October 24, 2016.
  • All Conference Sessions will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2016.
