Joan Tornow, author of Writing Memoir Together will offer tips and tricks on how to best promote memoir-writing workshops.

The special-subject presentations, lasting about 60 minutes, are recorded so others may listen at their convenience. Questions? Please contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) RELEASE THE ROBOTS The Washington State Library is now ready to accept sign-ups for the Lego® Mindstorm® Robotics kits. All public and tribal libraries are eligible to receive a circulating kit. Each individual location will have the kit for six weeks. We suggest allowing two weeks for the library staff to become familiar with the Robot and then four weeks for programming. Kits are designed to be used by up to 15 children simultaneously and recommended for ages 10 and older. The kit will come with the following equipment, housed in two shipping containers:

LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Core Set (x5)
Laptops w/ licensed Lego EV3 software (x5)
Projector
IR Sensor and IR Beacon/Remote (x4)
Extra Ultrasonic Sensor
Assorted extra LEGO Accessories and parts

Library systems can sign-up. We will negotiate the length of time a system may have the kit based on the number of locations in the system who wish to use it.

Supercharge them and make them even better! The groundbreaking research of Project VIEWS2 demonstrated that public library storytimes really do make a difference when early literacy principles are intentionally incorporated into their delivery. Register now for one of the free Supercharged Storytimes workshops, featuring Saroj Ghoting, a nationally-acclaimed figure in the field of youth services in libraries; Kendra Jones, one of the Joint Chiefs of Storytime Underground; and guest presenters who were among the 40 library staff who were participants in Project VIEWS2 research and were pioneers in incorporating the tools and techniques of VIEWS2 into their storytimes. The full day will consist of an overview of Project VIEWS2 research and its connection to Every Child Ready to Read; a demonstration of how to integrate VIEWS2 tools and methods into storytime programs to make them more effective; and the opportunity for attendees to immerse themselves in some hands-on practice that will Supercharge their storytimes! Workshops will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. PDT at the following locations:

May 2: Timberland Regional Library, Tumwater branch, Tumwater;
May 3: Camas Public Library, Camas;
May 5: Anacortes Public Library, Anacortes;
May 6: Silverdale Boy Scout Hall, Silverdale (across the street from the Silverdale Library);
May 9: Richland Public Library, Richland;
May 10: Yakima Valley Libraries, Sunnyside Community Library;
May 12: Argonne Branch Library, Spokane;
May 13: Neill Public Library, Pullman.

Contact Diane Hutchins at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) REFRESHING SCHOOL LIBRARIES GRANT CYCLE OPENS Because recent data shows the average copyright date of many school library collections is over 20 years old, Washington State Library (WSL) wants to help school libraries update nonfiction collections. WSL will provide up to 200 awards of $1,000 to K-12 school libraries for purchasing nonfiction books. If awarded a grant, teacher librarians will be able to select the books they wish through their regular acquisitions procedures. Preprocessed, shelf-ready books may be purchased if desired, but the maximum grant award is still $1,000. WSL will reimburse schools for their nonfiction book purchases up to $1,000. Only books purchased after awards are made and contracts between WSL and the school are fully signed are eligible for reimbursement.

WSL is compiling a booklist of suggested titles to help with selection. The titles are only suggestions and use of the list is not required. This list will reflect recommendations from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and WSL’s teacher librarian advisory committee. This title list will be available in late May 2016. Please contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) DIGITAL LITERACY 2016 GRANT CYCLE OPEN Washington State Library has opened the Digital Literacy 2016 grant cycle. This grant cycle will provide funding to public, academic, tribal, and school libraries to implement projects that support Digital Literacy in their community. Projects should focus on providing skills and resources needed within a community and by patrons. Digital Literacy grant applicants are urged to utilize project partners. Project partners could include non-profits, hospitals, credit unions, local businesses, etc.

The application deadline is Wednesday, May 25, 2016.

Overall funding to support this grant cycle is $75,000. This grant cycle has a limit of $7,500 per application. It is anticipated that ten (10) or more applicants may receive awards. Awards will be made contingent upon availability of federal funds and distribution of those funds by the Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
