Volume 12, May 19, 2016 for the WSL Updates mailing list Topics include: 1) OZOBOTS KITS HEADING OUT SOON 2) PREVIEW THE 2017 COLLABORATIVE SUMMER LIBRARY PROGRAM 3) NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE RESOURCES 4) METADATA ENHANCEMENT & REMEDIATION PROJECT GRANTS 5) SCHOOL LIBRARIAN’S WORKSHOP WEBINAR 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) OZOBOTS KITS HEADING OUT SOON The Washington State Library is now ready to accept signups for Ozobot kits. These tiny robots are much easier to program than the Legos® Mindstorms® Robotics kit. Children can quickly learn to program these robots to race which will be great fun and fit in well with this year’s summer reading theme. These kits are intended for children aged ten and up. For programming ideas, check out http://ozobot.com/. The kits are intended to accommodate up to 15 kids at a time and contain the following:

  • 7 iPads (6 standard size, 1 mini)
  • 9 sets of Ozobots (18 total)
  • 1 shipping container
The kits will be at a library for three weeks before they move onto the next location. Library systems can sign up; we will negotiate the length of time a system may have the kit based on the number of locations who wish to use it. Please sign up by May 25th by contacting Leanna Hammond at ([email protected]) as we plan to begin shipping kits on June 1, 2016. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) PREVIEW THE 2017 COLLABORATIVE SUMMER LIBRARY PROGRAM The Washington State Library is hosting a free webinar preview of the theme, artwork, and prizes for the 2017 Collaborative Summer Library Program (CLSP). In addition to previewing the materials, attendees will learn how CSLP functions and how their participation can make a difference for the Collaborative. This webinar will be recorded so others may listen at a later date.
  • Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PDT
  • Special Bonus: the 2018 CSLP theme will be announced during the program.

Questions? Please contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE RESOURCES Resources from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) will be June’s First Tuesday topic. Carolyn Martin, a librarian with the NLM’s Seattle branch, will share how to access medical information for your library’s customers. She will cover the free training provided by NLM and give an overview of the health and medicine resources available through webinars, blogs, and social media. The mission of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) is to promote the resources of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to health professionals and improve the public's access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health. First Tuesdays webinars are designed as a continuing-education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State. The special-subject presentations, lasting about 60 minutes, are recorded so others may listen at their convenience. Questions? Please contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) METADATA ENHANCEMENT & REMEDIATION PROJECT GRANTS The Washington State Library (WSL) announces a new Metadata Enhancement & Remediation Pilot Project. We’re offering Metadata Enhancement & Remediation Grants to support public, academic, and tribal libraries in remediating, re-cataloging, and/or enhancing digital collection records currently available to the public through digital library and digital repository systems. The primary purpose of these grants is to help institutions prepare for the eventual harvest of collection metadata by a regional or state-level Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) service hub. Overall funding to support this grant cycle is $25,000. This grant cycle has a limit of $5,000 per application. We anticipate that five (5) or more applicants may receive awards. Awards are contingent upon receipt of federal funds and distribution of those funds by WSL, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State. For more information, contact Evan Robb at [email protected] or 360-704-5228. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) SCHOOL LIBRARIAN’S WORKSHOP WEBINAR The Federal Depository Library Program presents School Librarian’s Workshop: Federal Government Resources for K-12, a free webinar. This webinar will explore specific federal agency sites which provide information in English and Spanish appropriate for elementary and secondary school students.
