Volume 12, August 4, 2016 for the WSL Updates mailing list Topics include: 1) DIGITIZATION GRANTS AWARDED FOR WASHINGTON RURAL HERITAGE 2016-2017 2) GRANTS AWARDED FOR WSL’S METADATA REMEDIATION AND ENHANCMENT PILOT PROJECT 2016-2017 3) ONLINE LIBRARY COURSES COMING SOON 4) EVALUATING EARLY LEARNING APPS 5) WALE 2016 CONFERENCE REGISTRATION OPEN 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) DIGITIZATION GRANTS AWARDED FOR WASHINGTON RURAL HERITAGE 2016-2017 Congratulations to the latest group of public libraries and heritage organizations recently awarded digitization grants through the Washington Rural Heritage program! Over the next year Washington State Library staff will be working with these organizations to digitize unique, historically significant materials held in their collections. Awardees will be trained in all aspects of digitization and their collections will be publicly hosted and digitally preserved through the Washington Rural Heritage website and digital repository. The statewide digital collection currently provides access to documents, photographs, audio and video recordings, and digitized cultural objects from more than 115 Washington institutions. In addition, the project includes approximately 325 family photo collections, making previously inaccessible materials available freely to the public. Below are this year’s grant recipients. $5,000 — Fort Vancouver Regional Library, Goldendale Community Library, in partnership with the Klickitat County Historical Society, Presby Museum.
$5,000 — North Olympic Library System, Port Angeles Public Library.
$3,870 — Whitman County Library, in partnership with the Tekoa Museum, the Perkins House (Colfax, WA), and the MacGregor Store (Hooper, WA).
$4,997 — Whatcom County Library System, Sumas branch library, in partnership with the Sumas Historical Society.
$2,432 — Whatcom County Library System, Deming branch library.
$3,520 — Asotin County Library, in partnership with the Asotin County Public Utility District.

Washington Rural Heritage is supported with Library Services and Technology Act funding provided by the federal Institute for Museum and Library Services. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) GRANTS AWARDED FOR WSL’S METADATA REMEDIATION AND ENHANCMENT PILOT PROJECT 2016-2017 Four Washington libraries will receive grants to jumpstart their metadata cleanup projects this year. This grant cycle supports libraries in preparing digital collection data for eventual harvest by a regional or state-level Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) service hub. The DPLA is a federated search portal that aggregates records from the digital collections of America’s galleries, libraries, archives, and museums. Below are this year’s grant recipients. $5,000 — Daniel J. Evans Library, Evergreen State College.
$5,000 — North Olympic Library System, Port Angeles Public Library.
$5,000 — Western Washington University Libraries, Heritage Resources.
$5,000 — Whitman County Library.

"Examination of library services to diverse populations including, but not limited to, ethnicity, national origin, language, gender, age, disability (human exceptionalities), and sexual orientation. Focuses on proactively developing collections and services that foster an atmosphere of inclusion and which meet the needs of all the library's users.” LIBR 122 “Public Services” ONLINE for 5 credits this fall. "Explores the policies, procedures, and tools used in public services, with a focus on customer service. Students learn about patron privacy issues, collection management, and library safety & security. Communication, customer relations, and problem solving will be explored in depth.” Register now – classes begin September 26. The WALE 2016 Conference is happening October 24-26, 2016 in Chelan, Washington.
Registration is open – early bird (cheap, cheap) rates end on September 19, 2016.
