This year’s scholarship recipients are:

  • Kathy Buchholtz, Colfax Branch, Whitman County Rural Library District
  • Elizabeth Hines, Sprague Public Library
It’s not too late to apply for a WSL Professional Development Grant to attend this year’s ARSL Conference. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) NEW WASHINGTON DIGITAL NEWSPAPERS WEBSITE “Extra, extra – read all about it!” Washington Digital Newspapers at the Washington State Library has a new website! And it’s mobile friendly! New features include:
  • “One hundred years ago…” front pages from Washington newspapers
  • Links to WSL’s microfilm collections for a full list of titles, publication histories, and essays about the newspapers’ influence on their communities
  • Browse newspapers by title, calendar date, or full text searching
  • Search on the go using your smartphone or tablet
We are beginning to merge Washington State Library’s Historic Washington Newspapers Online collection with the titles digitized for the National Digital Newspaper Program for full text searching of all digitized titles. The newest titles digitized for Washington Digital Newspapers will be found exclusively at this new website. Watch for over 50,000 digitized pages to be added to this new website by the end of 2016. Check out the Tacoma Evening Telegraph now and soon we’ll have:
  • The Eatonville Dispatch
  • Dankse Kronike (Danish/English)
  • Dat Moi (Vietnamese/English)
  • Centralia Daily Hub
  • Anacortes American
All newspapers dated pre-1923 are considered public domain and are an excellent primary resource for teachers, students, genealogists, and researchers. Questions about the new website?   • Melanie Swenson, Director of Health Information Technology, Kalispell Regional Health Care, will explain how access to the Kalispell Regional Hospital's patient portal and patient education resources was improved by using laptops, iPads, and training.
  • Laurel Egan, Director of St. James Healthcare Library, and her colleagues will describe their collaboration with community organizations to increase awareness of children's mental health resources in Butte, Montana.

  • The Early Learning Public Library Partnership (ELPLP) symposium will be Friday, October 7, 2016 in Yakima and brings together ELPLP members from throughout Washington. More information coming soon about the symposium program and registration.
This year, the symposium will be held back-to-back with the statewide meeting of the Early Learning Regional Coalitions.
  • All are invited to join the coalition meeting, Thursday, October 6, 2016 in Yakima. The Early Learning Regional Coalitions gather three times a year to discuss their work in family and community engagement, advocacy, equity, and development of the early learning system.

"Examination of library services to diverse populations including, but not limited to, ethnicity, national origin, language, gender, age, disability (human exceptionalities), and sexual orientation. Focuses on proactively developing collections and services that foster an atmosphere of inclusion and which meet the needs of all the library's users.” LIBR 122 “Public Services” ONLINE for 5 credits this fall. "Explores the policies, procedures, and tools used in public services, with a focus on customer service. Students learn about patron privacy issues, collection management, and library safety & security.
