The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) manual has added a section which allows adult programming to tie in with the summer reading programs which youth services staff are presenting. The webinar will review some adult programming ideas from past summer reading programs. The new 2017 manual will be out in early fall of 2016.

  • This webinar will take place on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PDT. It has been scheduled so as not to conflict with the Labor Day Holiday.

First Tuesdays is designed as a continuing-education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State. This free webinar allows attendees to share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. The special-subject presentations, lasting about 60 minutes, are recorded so others may listen at their convenience. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE CONTEST OPENS The annual Letters About Literature contest has begun! Please encourage teachers and students in grades 4 - 12 at your school or in your library service area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well.
  • Level 3 (grades 9-12) entries must be postmarked by December 2, 2016.
  • Level 1 (grades 4-6) and Level 2 (grades 7-8) entries must be postmarked by January 9, 2017.

The 24th annual writing contest for young readers is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, with additional support from gifts to the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, which promotes the contest through its affiliate Centers for the Book, State Libraries and other organizations. This is the 12th year that Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, has sponsored Letters About Literature as part of Washington Reads. For additional information, contact Crystal Lentz at [email protected] or 360-704-5275. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) 2ND ANNUAL HISTORICIAL ZINE CONTEST Washington State Library is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Historical Zine Contest. Participants are asked to create a Zine about some aspect of Washington History using primary resources. Entries will be accepted from four age groups:
  • Grades 4-6
  • Grades 7-9
  • Grades 10-12
  • Adults of all ages

Washington State Library is a division of the Office of the Secretary of State. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) WASHINGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY TRUSTEE TRAINING WORKSHOPS All Washington public library trustees and library directors are invited to trustee training workshops sponsored by the Washington State Library. These workshops will delve into the roles of trustees and the board’s relationship with the library director. Attendees will be more informed and confident about their working relationships, communicating with each other and their library director. Ruth Metz of Ruth Metz Associates will be the workshop trainer. Ruth has extensive experience working with libraries on leadership and organizational development. Public library governing and advisory board members are welcome. Dates and places:

  • Thursday, September 22 – Red Lion Hotel, 510 Kelso Drive, Kelso, 98626

You may register for sessions A, B, C, or D or any combination. Please note, to sign up for Session B - Lunch, you must attend either the morning or afternoon session or both. Workshop schedule: 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. – Gathering, morning coffee - Refreshments for gathering and breaks provided by Washington State Library. A. Morning session – 9:00 – 12:00 p.m. (three hours including break)
  • Welcome and a brief overview of public library service in Washington – 9:00 – 9:30 a.m.
  • Roles of trustees & working together as a board – 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. with a break
B. Lunch & Networking – 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Lunch provided by the Washington State Library. Please note, to sign up for lunch, you must attend either the morning or afternoon session or both. C. Afternoon session – 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. with a break

Please email Shirley Lewis at [email protected] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR MICROSOFT IMAGINE ACADEMY 2016-2017 GRANTS Applications are still being accepted to fund Microsoft Imagine Academy projects for coding programs and Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification. Organizations that are Microsoft Imagine Academy program members under State Library funding may apply for up to $4,500 per library system for equipment purchased by the State Library, and/or the funds to purchase equipment of the applicant library’s choice. Funding for materials, promotional activities, and other activities which support project goals also may be requested.
  • Grants are accepted continuously and will be reviewed every 2 weeks and awarded as long as funding is available.
