Need statistics on public libraries in the state of Washington? Interested in 2016 Salary and Benefits Data for libraries? Looking for a map of public library service in Washington? Find these as well as national rankings for Washington State Public Library Service (most recently from 2013) by visiting www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/WAStats. Public library statistics including budget, collections, and usage data, are collected and compiled annually by Library Development staff. For more information, contact Evelyn Lindberg, State Data Coordinator, at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) NEW PUBLIC LIBRARY TRUSTEE TRAINING GRANTS Washington State Library (WSL) is adding a component to the Professional Development grants for public library board of trustees training. This will allow public libraries to hire trainers or facilitators to conduct trustee training. These grants will support training to address the board’s needs conveniently at their local venues and on their schedules. WSL has budgeted $15,000 for the initial pilot project for these grants.   • Working together as a board including board self-evaluation
  • Understanding the library’s budget and budget cycle
  • Taxation or levy lid lifts – law and process
  • Annexation – law and process
  • Working with and evaluating the library director
  • Parliamentary procedure
  • Working with media, serving as a spokesperson for the board, public speaking
WSL will give preference to cooperative, multi-library board projects. For example, two library boards from different libraries could share training. In this case, the application would come from the sponsoring library, the match requirement would be made by the sponsoring library, and the grant reimbursement would go to that library. Libraries can arrange to share costs between (among) themselves if desired.
  • These grants do not fund individual trustee training; the intent is for trustees to train together as a board.
  • The board must be the legally constituted board of a Washington public library established as per the Revised Code of Washington.
  • Training could be part of a regular board meeting or a workshop session.
These grants are not for training of Friends of the Libraries Boards or library foundation boards. Such training is outside of the purposes of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) as defined by Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). These grants are subject to the same rules as other Professional Development grants:
  • The library applies and is reimbursed; not individuals.
  • There is a maximum amount awarded per library per calendar year: $3,000.
  • The applicant library is required to provide a 25% match for the allowable costs, which can be waived if the library serves a population of less than 5,000.

Please encourage teachers and students in grades 4 - 12 at your school or in your library service area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well.
  • Level 3 (grades 9-12) entries must be postmarked by December 2, 2016.
  • Level 1 (grades 4-6) and Level 2 (grades 7-8) entries must be postmarked by January 9, 2017.

The 24th annual writing contest for young readers is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, with additional support from gifts to the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, which promotes the contest through its affiliate Centers for the Book, State Libraries and other organizations. This is the 12th year that Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, has sponsored Letters About Literature as part of Washington Reads. For additional information, contact Crystal Lentz at [email protected] or 360-704-5275. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) LOCATING INFORMATION ON DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES WEBINAR The National Network of Libraries of Medicine – Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM - PNW) is offering a new online class on Locating Information on Developmental Disabilities using NLM Resources
  • The webinar takes place Thursday, November 10, 2016 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. PST
  • Deadline to register is Wednesday, November 9, 2016.
This online class will provide an introduction to developmental disabilities, tools to evaluate quality websites, NLM resources to answer health-related needs, caregiver information, ideas for programming, and ways to provide awareness to the community regarding developmental disabilities. This online class is eligible towards the Consumer Health Information Specialization offered by the Medical Library Association (MLA). Earn one MLA CE credit for attending the webinar only; earn three MLA CE credits for completing pre-class reading, webinar attendance, and class exercises. Questions?
