Teens are invited to create a 30 to 90 second video with their unique interpretation of the 2016 teen slogan “Build a Better World”. The idea is to involve teens in summer reading, before and during the summer months, by being part of the process. This is an opportunity for teens to showcase their creativity and have their ideas heard by a national audience. The winning video will be named one of the CSLP 2017 Teen Videos to promote summer reading nationwide.

$100 will be awarded to the creator of Washington’s winning video and their associated public library will receive prizes worth at least $50 from Upstart. Winners will be announced by CSLP in April 2017.
The deadline for a submission of a video for this contest is February 15, 2017.

Please contact Nono Burling at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) NEW STEM RESOURCES FOR LIBRARIES New, free sources of robust information on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) specifically for libraries have just been released by STAR_Net and Kitsap Regional Library: STAR_Net's resources include presentation and poster files, reports, evaluation instruments, and more from the 2015 Public Libraries & STEM conference. Kitsap Regional Library's Make Do Share project has just published a 64-page STEM programming guide which includes a STEM Library Roadmap and a STEM Library Playbook with program design and implementation suggestions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) PROQUEST TRAINING IN NOVEMBER ProQuest’s WA trainer, Jeff Cutler, is offering in-person, free training sessions at several Washington locations. While the sessions are being held at Educational Services Districts, this free training will be general in nature, and appropriate for any library staff interested in the latest enhancements to and features of the various ProQuest products included in the Washington statewide contract. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) LGBT ELDER CARE WEBINAR Join the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Pacific Northwest Region for a webinar overview of the health disparities experienced by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) elder populations:

LGBT individuals encompass all races and ethnicities, religions, and social classes. It is difficult to estimate the number of LGBT individuals and their health needs. [Healthy People 2020] While much of the media is focused on LGBT youth or transgender populations, LGBT elders also experience health disparities arising largely from societal stigma and institutional discrimination. The webinar will look at the unique challenges related to accessing high-quality LGBT elder care information and resources available to educate and address some of the disparities for aging LGBT populations. The draft plan is the result of a nearly yearlong collective effort of the agency and hundreds of stakeholders. OSPI is soliciting public comment during a “review tour” of Washington’s ESSA Consolidated Plan Review. Review tour forums and dates:
