We will briefly review other patron assistance options, such as resetting downloads and adjusting the holds queue. Library staff will receive tips on the best OverDrive training and promotional materials. Time permitting, we may also discuss publisher eBook pricing practices and how they affect budgets and collections. Instructions and Login for First Tuesdays session First Tuesdays was designed as a continuing-education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington. The free webinars allow attendees to ask questions and learn about new topics. These special subject presentations are recorded so others may listen at their convenience. Questions? Please contact Carolyn Petersen, Washington State Library, at [email protected] or 360-570-5560. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) TEEN VIDEO CHALLENGE The Washington State Library and the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) have launched the 2017 Teen Video Challenge, a national video competition for teens to get involved with reading and their public library's summer reading program. Teens are invited to create a 30 to 90 second video with their unique interpretation of the 2016 teen slogan “Build a Better World”. The idea is to involve teens in summer reading, before and during the summer months, by being part of the process. This is an opportunity for teens to showcase their creativity and have their ideas heard by a national audience. The winning video will be named one of the CSLP 2017 Teen Videos to promote summer reading nationwide.

$100 will be awarded to the creator of Washington’s winning video and their associated public library will receive prizes worth at least $50 from Upstart. Winners will be announced by CSLP in April 2017.
The deadline for a submission of a video for this contest is Wednesday, February 15, 2017.

Registration begins Monday, November 21, 2016 and classes begin Monday, January 9, 2017.

The course features development of proficiency in providing face-to-face and remote reference services in a variety of settings. The focus is on the nature and purpose of reference services, library principles governing them, customer service, conducting effective reference interviews, and developing familiarity with a broad array of print and electronic resources. Attention is also paid to assisting library users to become proficient in using library resources themselves.
