It’s not too late to submit your zine! Washington State Library is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Historical Zine Contest. Participants are asked to create a Zine about some aspect of Washington history using primary resources. Entries will be accepted from four age groups:

  • Grades 4-6
  • Grades 7-9
  • Grades 10-12
  • Adults of all ages

Washington State Library is a division of the Office of the Secretary of State. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE CONTEST The annual Letters About Literature contest deadline is nearing. Please encourage teachers and students in grades 4 - 8 at your school or in your library service area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well.
  • Level 1 (grades 4-6) and Level 2 (grades 7-8) entries must be postmarked by January 9, 2017.

The 24th annual writing contest for young readers is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, with additional support from gifts to the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, which promotes the contest through its affiliate Centers for the Book, State Libraries and other organizations. This is the 12th year that Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, has sponsored Letters About Literature as part of Washington Reads. Interested in 2016 Salary and Benefits Data for libraries? Looking for a map of public library service in Washington? Find these as well as national rankings for Washington State Public Library Service (most recently from 2013) by visiting www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/WAStats. Public library statistics including budget, collections, and usage data, are collected and compiled annually by Library Development staff. For more information, contact Evelyn Lindberg, State Data Coordinator, at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) NATIONAL ARTS AND HUMANITIES YOUTH PROGRAM AWARDS The National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards is the Nation’s highest honor for out-of-school arts and humanities programs that celebrate the creativity of America’s young people, particularly those from underserved communities.
  • The deadline for application submissions is Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. PST
  • After-school and out-of-school arts and humanities programs which are sponsored by museums, libraries, etc. are encouraged to apply.
  • Sign up for updates to receive the application announcement.
Recipients receive a $10,000 grant and the opportunity to visit the White House to accept the award. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) STAR_NET WEBINAR Dream Big to Build a Better World webinar from Star_Net with presenter Jeannine Finton from the American Society of Civil Engineers. She will share a variety of hands-on engineering resources, activities, presentation tips, and techniques designed to make engineering fun for all ages.
