Volume 13, January 19, 2017 for the WSL Updates mailing list Topics include: 1) WSL SERVICE CHANGES 2) FREE COMPUTERS – MIA LAB GRANTS 3) PRESERVATION GRANTS FOR SMALLER INSTITUTIONS 4) RECORDINGS AT RISK GRANTS 5) BEYOND GOOGLE – FINDING GOVERNMENT INFORMATION 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) WSL SERVICE CHANGES With an eye toward re-emphasizing its strengths as a Pacific Northwest and government publications research library, the Washington State Library is putting into effect several significant changes to its service model beginning February 1, 2017:

  • The State Library’s front lobby will become a State Information Hub featuring a State Library staff person on hand who can help with quick questions and referrals, plus two computer stations that allow 10 minutes of use, and easy hold pickups. The Hub’s hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
  • The library’s Reading Room on the second floor will be open by appointment only to people engaged in active collection usage and research. There will be no public computer terminals for unlimited use. Appointments to use the library for a quiet place to work or to use the public Wi-Fi will be available depending on staff availability.
  • The Reading Room will be newly configured to include designated space for collaboration and research appointments. A small break room will allow researchers not using collection materials to eat and drink onsite without interrupting their research time.
  • Library subject specialists will be available by appointment to consult on research topics including federal, state, and local government, Pacific Northwest history, and genealogy.
Ask a Librarian reference assistance by phone, online, and via live chat will continue to be available from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. State Library reference staff welcome question referrals via QuestionPoint in the areas of Northwest history and government documents to create a seamless experience for all libraries’ customers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) FREE COMPUTERS – MIA LAB GRANTS Equipment and funding is available for Microsoft Imagine Academy (MIA) program members to support the development of new or to expand existing Microsoft certification or coding programs. Laptops, 10-inch tablet computers, and routers purchased by the State Library are available, along with up to $3000 per award to purchase equipment accessories like cases, tablet sleeves, keyboards, etc., or other materials and activities to support project activities. There is no limit to the quantity of laptops or tablets that can be requested; hardware technical specs are available in the Grant Guidelines.
  • Lab Grant applications must be received by COB Tuesday, January 24, 2017, with contract execution expected before March 20, 2017.

Questions and comments about this opportunity should be directed to Elizabeth Iaukea at [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) PRESERVATION GRANTS FOR SMALLER INSTITUTIONS Preservation Assistance Grants, awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), help small and mid-sized institutions, such as libraries, historical societies, and archival repositories, improve their ability to preserve and care for their significant humanities collections. These may include special collections of books and journals, archives and manuscripts, prints and photographs, moving images, sound recordings, architectural and cartographic records, decorative and fine art objects, textiles, archaeological and ethnographic artifacts, furniture, historical objects, and digital materials. Applicants must draw on the knowledge of consultants whose preservation skills and experience are related to the types of collections and the nature of the activities that are the focus of their projects. Small and mid-sized institutions that have never received an NEH grant are especially encouraged to apply. The application deadline of May 2, 2017 is for projects beginning in January, 2018. For additional information and grant application materials, use this link: sos.wa.gov/q/NEHpreserve. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) RECORDINGS AT RISK GRANTS Recordings at Risk is a national regranting program administered by The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) to support the preservation of rare and unique audio and audiovisual content of high scholarly value. Generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the program will run four competitions from January 2017 to September 2018 and will award a total of $2.3 million. CLIR, in partnership with the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC), is currently accepting applications for the pilot cycle of the program, which will focus exclusively on the reformatting of magnetic audio media to be digitized through NEDCC’s newly implemented audio preservation service. The deadline to submit applications is Friday, March 3, 2017. The guidelines and application form are available online. A webinar for applicants will take place on January 12, 2017 at 11:00 p.m. PST. Details are on the For Applicants page (in the program timeline). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) BEYOND GOOGLE – FINDING GOVERNMENT INFORMATION This webinar, titled "Beyond Google - Another Look at Finding Government Information," will cover intermediate and advanced searching techniques, deep web search engines, and ways to find and use "hidden" resources. During the webinar, sample searches will be for statistics, born-digital, and digitized historical publications.
