To read more, use this shortcut link sos.wa.gov/q/FYI-17-1. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) BACKPACKS AND GEOCACHES – FIRST TUESDAYS February’s First Tuesdays topic, “Leaving the library for nature programming: backpacks and geocaches,” will be presented by Kylie Fullmer, Ritzville Public Library and Brooke Pederson, Upper Skagit Library. Our speakers, rural library directors from both the western and eastern sides of the state, will review lessons learned and best practices from their successful “leave-the-library,” nature-based programs. Kylie will talk about her outdoor backpack kits, ready to be checked out for family adventures. Brooke will discuss her local-history-focused “Cache in Concrete” geocache trail. Attendees will leave with ideas and templates to design their own self-directed, family-friendly, nature-based programs.

Designed as a continuing education opportunity for library staff in Washington State, these free First Tuesdays web presentations are an opportunity to learn about new library-related topics. Sessions are recorded so that others may listen at their own convenience. For more information about First Tuesdays, visit sos.wa.gov/q/FirstTuesdays. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) FAME AND FORTUNE – TEEN VIDEO CHALLENGE Time is running out on this opportunity, so please remind your teens about the contest. Fame and fortune could be theirs! The Washington State Library and the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) have launched the 2017 Teen Video Challenge, a national video competition for teens to get involved in summer reading, before and during the summer months, by being part of the process. Teens are invited to create a 30 to 90 second video with their unique interpretation of the 2016 teen summer reading slogan “Build a Better World.” This is an opportunity for teens to showcase their creativity and have their ideas heard by a national audience. The winning video will become one of the CSLP 2017 Teen Videos to promote summer reading nationwide.

$100 will be awarded to the creator of Washington’s winning video and the associated public library will receive prizes worth at least $50 from Upstart. Winners will be announced by CSLP in April 2017.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) JUMPSTART USER EXPERIENCE (UX) By designing your library with the user experience in mind, you have the potential to deepen the connection your library has with its community, and make your library a place that people love to use. This hands-on workshop presented by UX expert Aaron Schmidt is a practical guide to assessing and improving all sorts of touchpoints in your library, and also covers foundational UX theory. You’ll acquire experience with important user research techniques, and analyzing the resulting data. After this free workshop you’ll have a keener critical eye, and a framework with which you can make your library the most important place in your community. Workshops are scheduled from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at these places and times:
