1) LIBRARY SNAPSHOT DAY

It is almost April, the month when libraries of all types strut their stuff with special programs and events to shine a light on the library. This year WSL is partnering with WLA to promote one of these events, “Library Snapshot Day” from April 9 – 22. During this time window, libraries and library supporters pick one day and take pictures to show “a day in the life of the library.” Photos can be shared on social media sites and hashtagged for findability and retrieval. WLA has a flier with the details and the hashtags. Another option, should you care to use it, is to collect stories of your staff and patrons telling us why they love their library. A PowerPoint template (download the file) is available to make that easy to do. During the Library Snapshot window Nono Burling at WSL will be collecting these pictures into a Tumblr specifically set up for the purpose. Let’s create an endlessly scrolling page of all the library awesomeness that is happening around our state! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) FIRST TUESDAYS RAISES RELEVANCY Raising visibility means raising relevancy. April’s First Tuesdays webinar explains how the Spokane County Library District (SCLD) did just that by utilizing ALA’s Libraries Transform initiative. Listen in on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time as SCLD librarians Amber Williams and Kris Barnes present “Raising Your Library's Community Profile.” This webinar’s topics will include:

How community engagement has changed day-to-day job functions;
Strategies for making the time to be present in your community;
Best practices for implementing an engaged community focus.

The “Reaction to Change Quiz” tool will be discussed so consider taking the quiz ahead of time. For webinar logon instructions, visit sos.wa.gov/q/FirstT. And remember, a library that supports its community has a community that supports its library. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) APPLY FOR PNLA LEADS If you are an emerging leader serving in any capacity in a library in the Pacific Northwest and have a desire to network with other leaders and increase your skills, the PNLA Leadership Institute is for you. To date, 190 individuals have gone back to their libraries, library systems, and communities equipped with leadership and management skills to help guide their libraries in this time of tremendous and constant change. Qualifications for applicants:

Currently employed in a library
At least five years’ work in any library setting
Current member of PNLA or affiliated state/provincial library association
A completed application packet
Recommendation, based upon leadership potential and abilities, by sponsoring library which also indicates level of support

PNLA is excited to announce that planning is underway for the seventh PNLA Leadership Institute, October 22 – 27, 2017. The application process opens March 31, with a May 30 deadline. For more information visit www.pnla.org/leadership-institute. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) LIBRARY DEGREE PROGRAMS Spokane Falls Community College will be offering the following classes in the online LiS Certificate, LiS AAS, and Education Paraprofessional, School Library Media degree programs for library staff in spring [April-June]. These classes can also be used toward the ALA Library Support Staff Certification process. Library staff currently working in libraries can take advantage of prior work experience tuition discounts.
