1) FIRST TUESDAYS – BACK TO REALITY

Helping individuals involved in the justice system, especially those who have just left incarceration, is rewarding and challenging. They have unique needs that not everyone is prepared for. The First Tuesdays program for June will feature Anna Nash, Washington State Library, and Adrienne Breznau, Kitsap Regional Library presenting the program “Back to reality: Librarians helping patrons navigate the world during reentry.” Learn from librarians who have helped people, inside and out, how community libraries can assist with a successful reentry back into society.

First Tuesdays is designed as a continuing-education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State. This free web presentation allows attendees to share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. The special-subject presentations, lasting about 60 minutes, are recorded so that others may listen at their own convenience. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) WTBBL WINS NATIONAL AWARD

For the second time this decade, the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library has received top honors for its outstanding services to readers who are visually or physically impaired. The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, part of the Library of Congress, presented WTBBL Director Danielle Miller with the Network Library of the Year Award Friday, May 19 in the Library of Congress’ Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C. “To have our library recognized nationally with this award is wonderful. I am so proud of the staff and the dedication they have to providing services to our patrons. Their passion is evident in every aspect of the WTBBL operation, regardless of the job or task,” said Secretary of State Kim Wyman. 3) FREE BOOKS

The Washington State Library has the following titles to distribute to libraries in Washington State for community reads or classroom sets. These books are mostly trade paperbacks that have been gently used in community reads and graciously shared with the State Library community by the public libraries which originally purchased them.

4) WSL GRANT CYCLES CLOSING

5) DIGITAL LITERACY & FAKE NEWS

The Learning Revolution Project and founding partner, the San José State University School of Information, are excited to announce the second of three free Library 2.017 mini-conferences, “Digital Literacy & Fake News,” which will be held online Thursday, June 1^st from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time. This event is being organized in partnership with futurist Bryan Alexander, who will serve as moderator for the opening panel and as the closing keynote speaker. Invited panelists and presenters will look deeply at the foundational relationship of libraries and librarians to media, information, and digital literacy. All library professionals, employers, LIS students, and educators are invited to provide input and participate in this event. The sessions will be held in Blackboard Collaborate, and can be accessed live from any personal computer and most mobile devices.
