1) FINANCIAL LITERACY FOR LIBRARIANS
Do you receive lots of requests from patrons for help with financial matters? The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau wants to help make libraries the go-to source for unbiased financial education and resources in every community. This free all-day workshop (8:30 to 4:30) at the Central Seattle Public Library on July 19, 2017, will provide detailed information on the free resources available in your community to use when fielding financial questions from patrons. You will learn about organizations in your community that provide free unbiased financial literacy resources to help empower patrons to make appropriate financial choices for themselves. A wide array of financial topics will be covered, including:- Paying for college
- Prevention of financial fraud
- Planning for retirement
- Basics of credit such as mortgages and credit rating and scores
- Resources for seniors including financial caregiving and reverse mortgages.
2) GOOD, GREAT, OR UNFRIENDLY
Executive Director of United for Libraries and former Executive Director of Friends of Libraries U.S.A., Sally Gardiner Reed has decades of experience liaising between Friends groups and the libraries that they support, serve, and (sometimes) exasperate. In this free webinar Reed will offer guidance on building and maintaining these important relationships, showing not only how to effectively harness Friends' goodwill and enthusiasm but also sharing tactful techniques for steering an ineffective or unfriendly group down the right path. She'll also discuss fundraising, advocacy, programs, and membership development best practices.- Webinar: Working with Friends Groups: The Good, the Great, and the Unfriendly (United for Libraries) Monday, July 17: 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. PDT
3) COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
The Aspen Institute Dialogue on Public Libraries joins forces with the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) for “Public Library Innovations: A Story of Community Engagement.” This webinar will be a great resource for library leaders and city/county/state managers interested in designing more effective strategies for aligning library services with priorities of their communities. The Washington State Library (WSL) has purchased access to the webinar. If you are in the Olympia area, or fancy a visit, you are invited to attend the webinar free at WSL. 4) VIETNAM PROGRAMMING
Public libraries are invited to apply to receive a programming kit for “The Vietnam War,” a 10-part documentary film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that will air on PBS stations beginning Sept. 17. Fifty public libraries will be selected, through a competitive application process, to receive the kit, which will include a programming guide and a copy of the full 18-hour documentary series on DVD, with public performance rights. The kit will help libraries participate in a national conversation about one of the most consequential, divisive and controversial events in American history. Recipients will also receive promotional materials, online resources developed to support local programs, opportunities for partnership with local PBS station(s), and more. Applications must be received by August 1, 2017. For more information, and to apply, visit sos.wa.gov/q/Vietnam. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------5) PNR PARTNERS
PNR Partners is an intermittent webinar series showcasing the work of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Pacific Northwest Region funding recipients. Each session includes two awardees highlighting their funded projects. Through hearing the inspiration, the challenges and successes, and the stories surrounding these projects, we hope our listeners will be inspired to create their own projects and apply for PNR funding. These funded projects have provided a much needed service in the Pacific Northwest communities. Two librarians from eastern Washington came together to bring the Association of College and Research Libraries workshop, “Building Your Research Data Management Toolkit” to Spokane, WA in spring of 2017. The workshop trained regional academic and hospital librarians and support staff serving expanding medical programs and growing research needs involving rural populations. In June, 2017, the Comics & Medicine conference was held at Seattle Public Library where a mix of venues allowed a variety of participation by attendees to explore and promote how comics can be an avenue for health information, accessibility, and communication. Wednesday, July 12, 2017, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. PDT. Details: nnlm.gov/class/pnr-partners/7485.
