Library News
With Sno-Isle Libraries more than two million dollars in the hole, officials have a new piece of information that might fuel a vote for a tax increase. A group called “Yes for Libraries” conducted a random survey of voters in Island and Snohomish counties and found a majority would support a levy increase to either maintain or expand library services. Voters in Endicott, Farmington, and Malden will ask voters to annex their towns into the Whitman County Rural Library District. (Whitman County Gazette [Colfax], 6.4.09)
The Seattle Public Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously to impose overdue fines on previously exempt children’s books and English-as-a-second-language materials, charge a $5 fee for interlibrary loans and limit the number of materials a user can check out and place holds on. The City of Ferndale sought construction proposals for the 15,000-square-foot library (Whatcom County Library System) they are planning to build. The new building will replace the city’s 9,000-square-foot library. (Daily Journal of Commerce [Seattle], 6.16.09)

The decision by the King County Library System’s Board of Trustees directing library staff to negotiate a new lease so that the branch can remain at Ober Park is lauded as a testament to the power of a grassroots citizens’ movement. Awards
The Ellensburg Public Library is one of 4,000 libraries in the United States selected to receive two grants from the National Endowment of Humanities (NEH). The library will receive the “Picturing America art collection” awarded by NEH which consists of 40 large, high-quality reproductions of notable American art along with a comprehensive teacher’s resource guide. It will also receive the “We the People Bookshelf,” which is a collection of 21 hard cover classic literature written by some of America’s best authors based on themes central to American history and culture.
