Get in touch with Braille exhibit

Visiting the State Capitol in Olympia soon? Are you a state legislator, lege staffer or lobbyist who needs a short break from the chaos typically marking the final days of a legislative session? Or do you want to learn how the braille language was created?
If the answer is “yes” to any of these questions, check out the new exhibit on Louis Braille that opened today in the Legislative Building on the Capitol Campus. The display is located on the third floor between the House and Senate chambers.
A special event honoring Braille and his read-by-touch invention will take place Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with state legislators and the public invited. Secretary Reed will be among those speaking at 1 p.m. to cap the ceremony recognizing the exhibit. During tomorrow’s event, there will be a table next to the exhibit where staff will have examples of materials in braille, as well as braille fortune cookies. There also will be blind volunteers who can braille names or phrases for people who visit the table.
The exhibit will be in the Capitol until March 15. It then moves north to Seattle, where it will be shown in the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library March 17-29.
