This year’s conference, Delivering on the Discovery Expectation, promises to be an exciting one and will feature Stephen Abram as keynote speaker. Sessions include:

  • “The Real Cost of ILL” presented by Lars Leon;
  • “Delivering on User Expectations in a One-Click World” presented by Joanne Percy;
  • “Patron-driven E-Book Initiative by the Orbis Cascade Alliance” presented by Greg Doyle.
NWILL 2012 will take place September 13 – 14, 2012, at Portland Community College, Sylvania Campus, Portland, Oregon. Scholarships are available for four attendees; Continuing Education (CE) grants are also available from the Washington State Library. For additional information about NWILL 2012, and to register, visit www.nwill.org. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) PUBLIC LIBRARY FUNDING AND TECHNOLOGY STUDY How are public libraries continuing to provide access to technology despite budget cuts? More than 7,200 public libraries in all 50 states and the District of Columbia participated in the “Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study 2011 – 2012.” The study, appearing in the newly-released digital supplement to American Libraries, reveals:
  • Study data used to inform national policy, including new digital literacy initiatives from the FCC;
  • Libraries are part of the solution for those in search of the digital connection and literacy required by today’s competitive global marketplace.

For children, the Internet often serves as a positive and powerful arena for socializing and learning. However, the use of the Internet also brings about risks to their safety, including the dangers of sexual solicitation, online harassment and bullying, and exposure to illegal content. The National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) has compiled a number of resources on topics associated with Internet safety. Are you thinking about taking courses in preservation? ALA’s Preservation Education Directory has been updated and is now available for free on the website of its division, the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS). The Directory includes current contact information and course listings for graduate level preservation and preservation-related courses at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. It also lists institutions and organizations that provide continuing education courses in preservation. The Directory, now in its 9th edition, has been expanded from previous editions to include training in the areas of audiovisual and digital media preservation. Join esteemed Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl in a free Booklist webinar that features a discussion of her new book series, Book Lust Rediscoveries, a publishing program devoted to reintroducing some of the best (and now out of print) novels originally published between 1960 and 2000. Each new edition is personally selected by Nancy Pearl and includes an introduction by her, discussion questions for book groups, and a list of recommended further readings. Joining Nancy in the webinar will be Rhian Ellis, author of After Life, and Frederick G. Dillen, author of Fool, to discuss the series, as well as their own favorite moments of discovering a wonderful book.
