Travis Montgomery, Liberty Lake Library technology specialist, will share his hands-on experience with 10 different solutions for common repair and materials maintenance which face frontline library staff. Some of these solutions are free while others can be purchased for under $50. The ten technologies covered will be: Disc Resurfacing, Preventative Maintenance, Printer Maintenance, Basic Wireless Networking, Drive Vaccine, Microsoft IT Academy, M Disc Archival Backup, Hard Drive Cloning, Power Point Library Information, and Microsoft Steady State.

This is a free web presentation, which will take place on February 3, 2015, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PST.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) BOOK YOUR BANK PILOT PROGRAM OPPORTUNITY Bank On Washington’s mission is to provide un-banked and under-banked individuals with access to financial education and mainstream financial services. Sponsored by the Washington State Treasurer’s Office, Bank On Washington is a network of government entities, financial institutions, and non-profit organizations which includes nine local Bank On partners in eleven counties. These partners work closely within their communities to fulfill this mission. Currently, the counties included are Cowlitz, King, Kitsap, Mason, Pierce, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish, Spokane, Whatcom, and Yakima. Bank On Washington has been awarded a grant from Bank On 2.0 to reach out to the un-banked and under-banked in rural and hard-to-reach communities. Bank On Washington’s grant creates a pilot project called “Book Your Bank” which plans to work with local public and tribal libraries to create a financial safe place where community members can come once or twice a month to receive financial counseling and classes, get their credit score checked, access computers to do on-line banking, and open up bank accounts. 2015 Library Legislative Day Registration is open.

Library Legislative Day is a great opportunity to network with library supporters from around the state and meet with State Legislators and their staff to discuss the value of libraries. If you know a deserving library service retiree or library supporter, nominate them for an Emeritus Membership or Honorary Membership. Help WLA to recognize those who have been instrumental in improving library services or for outstanding work in libraries and to honor individuals or groups, who defend, champion, support and/or educate others about Intellectual Freedom in Washington State.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) GOT MOOC? Are you ready to MOOC? (What is a MOOC? A MOOC is a Massive Open Online Course which means that it is free to attend and open to all.) The American Library Association (ALA) is proud to announce its partnership with the Canadian Library Association (CLA) and the University of Toronto iSchool in offering its popular MOOC, entitled “Library Advocacy Unshushed: Values, Evidence, Action” beginning Feb. 1, 2015. Wendy Newman, a Faculty of Information senior fellow and lecturer at the University of Toronto iSchool, will lead this six-week adaption of a popular online elective class on advocacy, offering anyone, anywhere in the world, the opportunity to learn more about advocacy for libraries and strengthening of the communities they serve. The MOOC is offered through the EdX consortium in which the University of Toronto collaborates with other leading universities. Previous participants described the MOOC as a breakthrough in their understanding and action planning, stating that the curriculum “showed me the value of building relationships”, “made me approach our library’s advocacy much differently” and “helped me see advocacy in a new light.” Over 5,200 individuals participated the last time the course was offered.

“Library Advocacy Unshushed” is now available for registration.
The course will start on Feb. 2, 2015, and ends March 23, 2015.
There is no prerequisite, though basic knowledge of librarianship is recommended.
