Volume 11, May 14, 2015 for the WSL Updates mailing list Topics include: 1) STEM SURVEY 2) OCLC WORLDCAT DISCOVERY SERVICES 3) COMMUNICATING IN THE MIDST OF CHANGE WORKSHOP 4) FREE BOOKS FOR WASHINGTON LIBRARIES 5) CONFERENCE OPPORTUNITIES 6) FREE CE OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) STEM SURVEY Many libraries in Washington are engaged in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities – so many that it’s difficult to keep track and effectively share ideas and best practices from system to system. Let us know what your library is up to by completing the survey below. We’ll compile the results and share them statewide (for a start).

  • Only ONE response per library/system is needed.
  • Please have a representative from your library complete the survey no later than May 30th.

Please email Elizabeth Iaukea at [email protected] if you have questions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) OCLC WORLDCAT DISCOVERY SERVICES OCLC’s new WorldCat Discovery Services will replace FirstSearch on December 31, 2015. All libraries who use FirstSearch to search WorldCat and the base package databases available through FirstSearch will need to transition their searching to WorldCat Discovery over the next 6 months. The top three reasons for registering for WorldCat Discovery now are:
  1. It’s fast.
Filling out the registration form lets OCLC staff know you’ve heard about the transition, and lets you take the next step. You’ll receive your unique WorldCat Discovery URL, information about setting up staff accounts, how to configure, get statistics, find training resources, and more.
  1. It’s free.
There are no costs associated with registering for WorldCat Discovery. If you have an unlimited FirstSearch/WorldCat subscription, which applies to all members of Washington Group Services (see sos.wa.gov/q/waywho for a list), the transition is included in the cost of your subscription. You can add options to make WorldCat Discovery a full discovery service. But the options are just that … optional.
  1. It’s easy.
Fill in a few fields that you know the answers to: name, institution, etc. You need your OCLC symbol, but there’s a lookup link on the page. Once registered, you can use both services side by side until you’re ready to transition all of your searching to WorldCat Discovery. The two services will operate in parallel through December 31, 2015. Registering now gives you more time with both interfaces before FirstSearch access ends. For more information, visit www.oclc.org/en-US/worldcat-discovery.html. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) COMMUNICATING IN THE MIDST OF CHANGE WORKSHOP Changes in libraries can have a large impact on staff, customers, and other stakeholders. Something as small as rearranging a few chairs and tables can lead to strained interactions if change is not communicated well. What about the larger changes? The tools and processes for communicating change are similar whether the change is minuscule or enormous. Whether you are dealing with customers who have a hard time adjusting to changes in their environment (e.g. rearranged furniture) or staff who are trying to maintain high levels of service in the midst of major changes (e.g. moving to a new building), good communication is imperative at every level of the library.

Usually a minimum order of 5 copies of the same title is required but we are offering a mix and match special on these titles, minimum of 5 total books per order. These will be distributed on a first come, first served basis at no charge to the requestor.
